Hospice and the Just Right Mattress

Hello.

Caring for a loved one brings so many learning curves. For those who are dealing with so many questions and so few answers, don't give up!

My mother is in late stages and has a bed from hospice that allows air circulation. Unfortunately, half of the inflatable "tube," every other one, has deflated. My siblings and I have taken it apart to figure out what's wrong but have had no luck.

Should we ask hospice to replace the mattress? What if we end up with the same type? Can anyone recommend a good mattress to prevent bedsores?

Thank you for listening.

There are some types of mattresses that inflate and deflate in a pattern so as to change where the body weight is supported. I have no idea if yours is one of those. I would put that mattress back together and call hospice for a replacement. They should explain to you why they chose that particular type of mattress. Since even non-profit hospices watch their money, finances are a factor, but what the doctor says she needs should rule. I hope others will come on with their experiences, and also you could get a second opinion.

You're describing how an alternating pressure air mattress works. The air chambers in the mattress inflate and deflate to avoid constant weight on pressure points which lead to skin breakdown.

If the one chamber never inflates, it likely has a leak. Have the hospice nurse check this today so it can be replaced if not working properly.
