Knee Replacement Day 6 - Questions

My DH is on Day 6 of recovery. He is in pain and I am worn out. After surgery in the hospital he started having bladder urgency to the point we couldn’t get the urinal in time. This has continued at home. We were up 7 times last night. He has been wearing pads, but overflows pad and links on underwear. It is time to get started on Depends although more complicated getting on/off and having to take off jogging pants etc. with pain.

I am worried about this beginning incontinence, or is it caused from the surgery? Any experience with this from surgery.

Also, any recommendations for Depends that is easy to take on and off? Thank you!

Taking them off should not be a problem. You can cut them off with a pair of scissors. Perhaps during recovery from surgery, adult diapers may be than a pull up?

I've always just torn at the side seams to get them off. But midge may be right that diapers with tabs may be easier for the immediate time

    Hi JustBreathe2

Sometimes the anesthesia takes a while to clear the system, particularly for the aged. Also the anesthesia can play havoc with the prostate. Many older men have this difficulty after surgery. Consult with your PCP about the urgency and discuss some possible remedies.

I agree with Midge and Plenty about the adult diapers. I hope this is temporary for you.

I would ask his doctor or doctor's assistant. Normally TKR is done with a spinal and something like Propofol which should have cleared his system by now. He may have gotten a nerve block that last a couple of days as well. Pain medication might be playing into this as well.

In the meantime, a tabbed diaper-style incontinence brief would easier to put on for now. Tear away track pants would also be helpful.

Thanks all. He had a spinal block, so should have cleared his system. The pain meds may play a part too with his memory. I bought some pull up pants and will try diapers with tabs next. The tear away track pants was the best purchase for knee surgery.

I moved very slowly after my TKRs. I described using the walker to go from the bedroom to the bathroom as crossing the desert. It took quite a bit longer than normal. I can totally understand that a person with dementia might not recognize the need to start the walk soon enough. Especially since it’s painful to walk. Give it a couple weeks. Make sure he’s icing that knee every couple of hours when awake and keeping it elevated.

I got my mom Tena overnight depends on Amazon. They are very thick. I think there are some that have tabs more like a diaper. Depends you get in the local grocery store are not going to be much better than the pads.
