seroquel
Hope everyone has survived the day. I'm searching for a solution to my newest dilemma and hoping you fine folks on here can shed some light. My DH is experiencing some hallucinations (people in the house, vehicle, etc), as well as ever increasing agitation, temper tantrums and fractured sleep. I've scheduled an appointment with a geripysch (Jan2026). Fortunately DH is not violent/physical. His PCP was reluctant to prescribe anything due to DHs already unstable gait, increased fall hazard. However, he did go ahead and prescribe the seroquel, 25mg, 1 tablet before bed time. We tried the seroquel, one night, and it did help DH sleep better. However, at his 11pm bathroom schedule, he stood up (sleeps in a recliner) and sat back down. Couldn't walk to the bathroom. Fortunately, I was awake and was there immediately. He used the urinal jug. He woke a couple more later times and all seemed back to his normal self. So, because I do NOT want to risk him falling, we have decided to not continue with the seroquel. We are using Melatonin with no ill effects, but still fractured sleep. Anyone have a PWD experiencing behavior issues, sleep issues and an already unsteady gait? If so, please share. I just think if the guy could get a good nights rest, it would help.

Milo you may try giving DH half the dose of seroquel from 25 to 121/2, with the melatonin. This has worked with my DW and should take care of the fractured sleep. My DW had the same problem as your DH until her body became use to the seroquel. I think your right about the good night rest, it is so important for both of you.

Try giving him half in the after noon and see what happens. It should help with agitation and not really make him to drowsy . Then if he is fine give him the other half at night and see what happens. It probably was because it was a new drug and he wasn't use to it. You might have to start slow. This way you are awake to watch him. Seroquel is usually given for agitation not sleep. My Dh is on it.

Thank you all for the suggestions. We'll readdress with the PCP.

OK, if everything else ain't enough! We cut the dose in half, 25mg to 12.5mg and it seems to be working great! NOW, however, he is experiencing slight constipation. He is still managing to poop a little, everyday, have tried adding Miralax and prune juice, BUT he def is NOT pooping regular. I'm guessing my only option will be to discontinue the Seroquel, and wait on the geripysch appt in Jan2026?

Honestly, I think it is pretty unlikely that 12.5 mg per day of seroquel is causing constipation. There are many reasons for constipation and treating with miralax and prune juice is a great idea. If the seroquel is working, I would suggest continuing it.

After much thought, I agree! Actually he had a couple of previous bouts with constipation prior to starting the seroquel and I'm thinking it's just coincidence that it reared it's ugly head again at the same time we started the seroquel. We are going to continue on with the seroquel and just monitor/treat the constipation, for now. Next step will increase the seroquel to the 25mg. I love you folks and all the help. Thank you

A nurse in the hospital said to heat up the prune juice in the microwave as it worked better that way.

have him eat 6 prunes before bed and then drink 1/2 cup prune juice in the morning before coffee. If that doesn’t work buy Swiss Kriss natural laxative. Worked for me and my DH.

Thank you, we will try that. Tried it in his coffee, but he poured the coffee out
