Time to go to bed and watch tv a while. It's been a long day. Hope all of you have a good nights sleep. Thought I would start 212 while I thought about it. Good night.

All's quiet tonight, never any visitors on this night where I live, thankfully!

Tomorrow I will go to transport my friend from the convalescent home where she has been after her fall four months ago, back to her home. I hope she will be okay living on her own again.

    Happy November, Everyone!

Hi, Lorita. I rarely post, st least at this point. I’d like to know what numbering means in this thread. Is 212 the number of posts so far?
I am relatively new to this blog and follow it frequently. There is always good information. My DH was diagnosed with MCI last year, so I’m trying to figure things out. It sure isn’t anything either of us was expecting.

Ron, I hope you enjoyed the cake! I was proud to get it out of the pan without messing it up! Cake making isn’t my specialty but for some reason I woke up thinking “ I’ve got to make a cake today “. Turns out it was the birthday of my Aunt’s DIL. And even though she doesn’t eat flour, she happily ate a small piece.

    IMG_4154.jpeg

And then: Remember I told you about shopping for my Aunt? Well, the one thing that was missing was a new pair of shoes, so they came yesterday. And, she LOVED THEM!

    IMG_4155.jpeg

Lots of little visitors yesterday: Great Great nieces and nephews

She’s feeling better and it was such a good day. I am grateful ❤️ and wanted to share with you all.

    Good morning Porchlings.

It's to be a chilly fall day here made chillier by steady winds. No rain today, so I'll take it.

@CharlieS Hi and welcome. This boards are a great place for support and solutions on your caregiving journey. This thread is a lovely place to take a break and visit with friends.

Judith— I imagine 16-year-old-you might have enjoyed a different itinerary than today-you might. That's a lot of opera and cathedrals, regardless.

Jerilynn— What was the link in #211? My security suite labeled it dangerous which seemed odd. The pictures are great. Bundt cakes are always dodgy. I always make sure to have some pudding, whipping cream, fruit and syrup in care I have to pivot to a trifle or Eton Mess.

It's funny about elderly siblings who squabble. You'd think they'd get along at this point. Mom and her remaining sister have something of a frenemy vibe. Mom's the most nonconfrontational human on the planet but with her sister she morphs into something downright feisty. After their visits, I get a call from each reporting that the other is "losing it". LOL, they're not wrong.

The kiddos and your aunt are very cute. Those shoes look like something my mom would claim to need. We had a lot of Spidermen last night, but I don't recall any mermaids.

Lorita— I am sorry Billy is limping again. I hope a second round of medication does the trick for him.

Carl— That's a lot of festivity in a short time frame.

Tigermom— I don't envy you having to tote a pet carrier on foot. Maybe you need a pet stroller. They're all the rage here. When I had 2 cats, I made the rookie mistake of getting one large carrier. I hope your roof situation is a quick and inexpensive fix.

Zetta— When mom adopted her cat, she came from apartments and single-story homes so the stairs were a real novelty. Zoomies indeed.

Ron— That's a lot of X-rays. I hope they lead to some improvement in how you're feeling.

Gothic G— Happy Anniversary to you and Mr. Gremlin. Your reception must've been a very fun time for all who attended. That's a great picture.

    ___________________________________________________________________________________

We had almost 50 kiddos last night. Being at the far end of a cul de sac cuts down the numbers. This year the candy bars were more popular than the packaged cookies which is different. Nobody wanted the Ritz Bits and I have several Kit Kats left in the bowl.

I need to swing by mom's and help her cut down the rest of her perennials. I want to move a couple of her Hostas as well. Frances Williams is obscuring the Patriots so I need to tweak things. Maybe I'll do that this afternoon. Our Saturday dinner companion is in the Bahamas with her kids and grandson, so I'll need to sort out dinner, too.

    Good afternoon

welcome to the porch CharlieS. Yes the number stands for how many pages there are on this thread since it started. Somebody else may come along and do better at explaining. Lorita able to tell you how many years it’s been going I know it’s a long time. Maybe somebody else can explain it better too.

Know those little kids bring great joy to your Aunt. When anyone brings children into the home where my mom is their eyes light up they love seeing those little kids. Sometimes the workers will bring their own children in, which is nice.

We have a beautiful blue sky today. I’m enjoying it. We’ve had quite a few cloudy dark days this week.

Morning, barely. Bright, sunny and cool here. Had to buy a new flag because the wind blows so much here it breaks the grommets. The flag is flying this morning, half way between half staff and full. Charles deserves that.

Welcome to our front porch, Charlie. Judith is right in saying this is the 212th month since we began numbering. This thread goes back to 2008, when Charles was first diagnosed with vascular dementia. My sister had begun to have symptoms so I couldn't talk to her about it. I really didn't know what to expect so needed help. I found it. My mother had Alzheimer's but I still needed help.

You have found a good place. Please ask anything you have questions about. The number beside the poster's name is the number of posts that person has made. Not completely representative because the format was changed a few years ago so the number of posts.before then are not counted. If you don't mind, tell us a little about yourself.

I live in Eastern Oklahoma on a farm/ranch. Charles and I ran cattle and when I lost him, I continued. I did sell the girls in late 2021 to our vet. The girls are still here -leased the land to him. I still have a steer, Billy. He only has vision in one eye and I have realized I have never beard him bawl. Currently he has footrot in his left back foot. I have given him one round of antibiotics but he was still limping so I began another round yesterday. He is really sweet and big! His shoulders are almost as high as I am tall, 5'6". His daddy weighed 2200 lbs. Here I go, talking too much.

The conjunctiva in my right eye, inside corner, began bothering me yesterday morning. Something must have happened during the night. Vision is okay but because I wear glasses it's hard to see what is going on if I take them off. Back later.

Good afternoon all. The drizzle has moved off and a beautiful blue crisp day is here. The sky doesn't have a cloud in sight.

Y'all have put me in the mood to make a German Chocolate cake for DH. That happens to be his favorite.

I've been trying to catch up on things here. I keep a neat house and things under control, but with all of the appointments we've had, I just feel like things have slipped. There is always something to do, but it might not be what I want to do!!

I do need to pop to the post office and mail thank you's I've written for an origination we we're a part of. I didn't realize how much correspondence was involved when I stupidly volunteered for this job!!

Everyone be safe out there. Back later after football.

Hello all. Football this afternoon, son, DIL and their 4 kids who are at home are coming for dinner. They pretty much do, every Saturday. Tonight's menu: Italian sausage sandwiches, veggie tray, air fryer roast potatoes, applesauce, chips, pickled beets and sweet pickles and Scotcharoos. I feed VERY hungry kids; that's why I'm serving so many things!

    Enjoy your weekend, everyone!

I love banana pudding, Ron. I sometimes make a small one with one or two of those pudding cups with bananas and vanilla wafers.

Good football game on right now- Oklahoma vs. Tennessee OU 13_ Tennessee 10.

I may have conjunctivitis but my sclera isn't red or pink - looks like there is a little bump on the inside of my bottom lid. Guess I'll go see my eye doctor Monday if I can get an appt.

Sheena stayed outside four hours in the middle of last might and has wanted to stay out all day. Got her in a while ago.but she's out again now and doesn't want to come in.

Gave Billy some more hay!.. Only have two bales left plus maybe enough for tomorrow. We always but some small bales from a.neighbor so may need to do that next week.

You all sleep good tonight.. Good night.

Halloween was quiet at our house too - no visitors. That's kind of how it is on our block - the houses are spaced out, so there's not a lot of bang for the buck. If I were a kid, I'd skip my block too. 😄

My trainer told me a funny Halloween story. Last year he didn't leave out candy, he left out condiment packets - ketchup, mustard, mayo. I said, "you're all about the tricks, and no treats." He just thought it was funny. I'll ask him on Monday what he ended up doing this year.

Thank you all for the anniversary wishes, we had a good one. My s.o.'s paella was incredibly good. He did a seafood version so it had a lot of shellfish along with some black cod.

Today I did some pro bono legal work at a legal clinic. It makes me happy to give back.

We had a rare, sunny day! It was chilly, but still - sun. It had stormed last night, so our long driveway is covered with leaves again. I had cleared the driveway yesterday, but now it looks like I didn't do a thing.

JeriLynn - your cake looks delicious!

That's a wonderful photo of your aunt and the little ones. So cute.

You know what other foot wear is fun? Snoozies. They're actually really warm (cozy, too), and some of them are really cute. Believe it or not, I have a pair like this. I've always liked the "pairables" too.

Hi Charlie! - I haven't posted in this thread for 10 years, but I've been on this site since 2019. I joined when my sister was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's and FTD.

Oh my gosh, Beth. I'm coming over to your house! Your menu sounds wonderful.

Lorita - I'm crossing my fingers that you don't have conjunctivitis.

Good morning! It's Sunday and it's November, and Daylight Savings Time is gone for another season. Now we get back the hour of sleep we lost last Spring, unless like me you woke up at five for no reason.

We had a freeze last night, first freeze of the season here in SW MO. I unhooked my outdoor hoses yesterday so the pipes would not freeze. The leaves have started turning in earnest during the past week, and the trees are looking really pretty.

    Have a blessed Sunday!

44, drizzling and a little windy here this morning. Our trees have also changed a lot this week. It's beautiful.

GG, I'm looking to see if they have a Red Ruby Sequined Slipper and if so, I'm ordering. lol

Welcome @CharlieS, we're glad to have you join us on the porch.

We need some lap blankets and hot tea, hot chocolate, hot coffee and cookies on the porch today.

OOOH, I saw a yummy looking recipe for sweet potato patties wrapped in Crescent Dough smothered in sweetened condensed milked, lots of butter and covered with sugared cinnamon to bake. I think I'll make that this afternoon. I'll be back later to set the table. Have a good day everyone.

Morning, beautiful, warm day on tap and all of the coming week. I slept through the night and my eye may be a bit better. Maybe I won't need to go to doctor.

Gave Billy his medicine with some sweet feed, then after he ate that gave him creep and some fresh, sticky with molasses, sweet feed. He needed water so did that and will give him hay a bit later.

Watching morning news shows and will watch our Chiefs, Eagle, later. Guess I will need to cook something later, getting tired of potato soup.. Enjoy your Sunday.

    Good morning.

GG, Happy 33rd Anniversary! I missed it, so I went back to #211 to see. You and your SO seem like two peas in a pod.

Condiment packets for Halloween? I'm surprised he didn't have condiments squirted all over his house.

    I love the Snoozies!

Beth, I'm sorry I missed Saturday night dinner. Do you pickle your own beets? My aunt did, she told me how but I never have done it myself.

JeriLynn, your aunt is fortunate, with delicious homemade cake, gold shoes and beautiful great-great grandchildren!

Lorita it's great that you hung a fresh flag. It's respectful to Charles and to our country. Years ago my newspaper posted a photo of a tattered flag blowing in the wind. I wrote a Letter to the Editor that it was disrespectful to photograph that flag. A tattered flag should be honorably disposed of. Boy Scouts and VFWs perform that function. Also, a flag that is displayed at night should be lit.

I don't display my flag often but I do bring it out for holidays.

I get a little bump on my lower eyelid. After a few days it disappears. I believe it might be due to irritation from a fine cat hair or dust particle. I'll be interested to know what your ophthalmologist says.

It's amazing that cows can grow so big eating only grass and hay abd creep.

I thought I had left my cat Sammue out all night because I couldn't find him, but he was in the second bedroom. There is so much stuff in there that I cannot find him if I searched for him. I didn't think to call his name.

Welcome to Lorita's Front Porch, Charlie.

Good afternoon all. Absolutely picture perfect beautiful blue sky with cooler temperature day here today. Just gorgeous. I could sit on the patio all day and do zip. I've got DH's German Chocolate cake baking now, I didn't get to it yesterday and of course, like Lorita I've got to watch the Chief's this afternoon. I'm really trying to make an effort not being so busy I'm exhausted all the time. It's perfectly fine to sit and just be - I'm working on that.

I hope everyone and enjoy their day. Let's be safe everyone.

I agree, Eagle, it is so pretty today. Wish we could have a month of this. Charles loved German chocolate cakes, too but I haven't made one in years.

Iris, we always flew the flag and after Charles left me I made a promise to always have one up as long as I could. It looks bro pretty when it isn't too windy.

The bump is on the inside of my eyelid so it is irritating. Can't imagine what caused it. I have blepharitis and that could be a contributing factor. If it is still improving tomorrow I may not go. It's 60 mile round trip. I remember people always used to use Murine eyedrops, don't know if they were medicated. I have really dry eyes, not enough to even float contacts. I tried in my twenties to no avail. I use Thera Tears, Systane and Refresh drops.. My doctor us an Optometrist. My Ophthalmologist retired a couple of years ago and somehow I got referred to this lady. She was in the office with him so I knew her. I wish our little town had an three of mine efore I can rest.Ophthalmologist or an Optometrist. It only has one doctor, one urgent care and a health and wellness office. That sounds pretty good for between three and four thousand,

I guess. I bet you scared when you thought Sammue was outside. I have to see all three of mine before bedtime.

Iris, I know you would love seeing the cattle and the interaction between them. The babies stay very close to their moms the first month but after then, they kind of explore and begin to find other little friends. The moms have the babies on a feeding schedule and when it's time to nurse, they call the baby and make them come to her. At that certain time of day, you can hear the cows calling the babies.

They are a family and when one dies, they gather around for a while, just like a funeral, and grieve. Most people just think they're dumb cows. They are not- very smart. My cousin, Patsy, told me that's what she thought until I told her differently. Okay, I will stop. One more thing, the cows eat quite a lot. Hay is always out for them and they get feed every other day. We have creep feeders so there is always feed for the little ones. Cows can't get in the creepers. Can you all tell I love cattle and enjoy being around them? Gotta go get some hay for Billy.

Lorita, I love your stories about the "girls" and Billy. I dont think animals are dumb, in fact, I think they are smart to be able to search for food and shelter and to know how to get from place to place without a map!

I wasn't afraid about Sammie because I know he can take care of himself outside, because he used to be feral. But I was annoyed at myself because I couldn't remember if I had let him back in. My memory is bad that

I usually use something to help it. I usually keep a bag of cat food as a door stop outside. I should bring it in only when I am certain that both cats are back inside.

I too have blepharitis and dry eyes. I have Sjogrën's Syndrome. In the earlier days, my eyes teared a lot, but not the oily tears. I have used moistening drops and ointments, but I don't use them now. I use a very bright flashlight and a magnifying mirror to check my eyes when they are irritated. I need to schedule an eye appointment myself.

The other day I went with the seniors on a day trip to the L A Maritime Museum. It tells the story of the fishing industry and about some ships.

    1000002939.jpg

First we had a view of the Port of Los Angrles, the busiest port on the west coast. Cintainer ships are loaded and unloaded 24 hours a day.

    1000002917.jpg 1000002919.jpg

    These are giant cranes.

The earliest fishing industry was of sardines and anchovies. After they were overfished, it was decided to focus on tuna. But how to make tuna acceptable in those days, before WWI? It was decided to make tuna to be considered a health food. The women who worked at the cannery were dressed in nurses' uniforms with nurses' caps, to reinforce the idea of health and sanitation.

    1000002924.jpg

A photo of women workers in nurses' uniforms

    1000002923.jpg

    The nurse uniform

Tuna became very popular, there were many recipes, even a tuna pie.

We were treated to viewing classic tv commercials of Charlie the Tuna.

Then we learned about life on submarines and aircraft carriers. Here is a replica of the USS Nimitz.

That was so interesting, Iris. All of those things are completely foreign to me. It is amazing to see those huge cranes or whatever they are that unload those big containers. The weather looked so nice for your trip. There are so many interesting things for you to see out there.

I used to really like tuna.but haven't eaten it in many years. I usually keep a couple of cans for the cats in case they feel bad.

Just went out to take down the trash. Car wouldn't start so took it down in the PU. All the girls are in the.NE and east pasture but one little calf was in the West pasture close to the yard fence.. I opened the gate to that pasture, walked way around.him and he went through the gate. When he got out where he could see the girls, he bawled and.his mother answeted.. Got him through the gate and he latched on for supper. Guess they left him there and now they're going back. She knew where he was. Now I can give Billy some hay before the Chiefs' game. I did and he began eating it before I got the wire off.. I need a couple more bales for.him this week. Guess I will call Ray tomorrow. I like to keep a few bales in the corn crib, just in case.

Opened the car hood and the resident rat had brought in leaves and sticks and some corn kernels he found. I have a battery charger but not sure my extension cords will go that far. Never have used jumper cables. I'll ask Darwin to jump it tomorrow. Hopefully the rat hasn't chewed wires. Carl, the battery looks so different. It has a cover over it and I'm not too sure where to hook on with a charger. Last time it wouldn't start, Gary did it. Should have watched closer...

Iris, have you ever used those eye drops for.blepharitis? I have used Ocu-Soft to wash your lids. Will do that tonight.
