Im new to group chats and im new to my dad having dementia, im not new to dementia i did at home health care when I worked and i thought if my parents needed me to care for them i would b a pro but dementia is the worst disease. My dad is 65 and lived a very healthy life and that made him happy but I’m like my mom I just want to b happy and pasta makes me happy lol
But one of the reasons I came on here is to get some advice on keeping my dad inside. Tonight was a bad night he, I mean we have been up all night bc he wants to go for a walk at 3am but try and tell someone they can’t when they think nothing is wrong. The cops in my area know he has dementia and we have had adult protective services come by.
Sorry for the rant but I wanted to give a little background

welcome. Sorry about your Dad. 2things you can do to stop the wandering. Get locks for the doors so he can’t open them. They make locks for dementia or you can gave a locksmith put in double sided dead bolts and you wear a key. The second thing is that many sheriffs depts have tracking devices for dementia patients so if he does wander they can find him easily. They are usually worn on the wrist. Your Dad has agonosia which is the inability to understand he has a disease. You can’t reason with someone whose reasoner is broken. Read the book “The 36 Hour Day” which helped me after my husband’s diagnosis. Then search online for dementia caregiving videos by Teepa Snow or Tam Cummings. Talk to his doctor about him not sleeping and about his anxiety. They can prescribe medications that might help. The best type of doctor for dementia meds management is a Geriatric Psychiatrist. Get a referral to one if you can. Come here often for support or to vent. We understand what you’re going through.
