Medicaid Cuts, Inside Info or Tea Leaf Readers?
Spoke to a Medicaid attorney about father's remaining $ and an irrevocable trust. You lose 1 month of Medicaid eligibility for every $10k you set aside (in CO). Problem is, $1 trillion cuts are set to go in effect 1/1/27 so the attorney said he can't guarantee any outcomes at this point. If those stay in effect, the care home where my dad is will probably close.
Any thoughts/research? The trillion dollar cuts are part of the bill Trump signed in July.

those cuts are only for illegal Immigrants or people who were not eligible. There was lots of fraud discovered. The only other requirements are for people who are able bodied there will be work requirements. Medicaid is administered by each state. In many states you can get both Medicare and Medicaid.

This from AI: Medicaid cuts scheduled for 2027 include new work requirements for some adults and a reduction in retroactive coverage. Specifically, starting January 1, 2027, many able bodied adults between 19 and 64 will be required to work or participate in job training for at least 80 hours a month to maintain eligibility. No changes to disabled benefits. Retroactive coverage will be reduced from three months to two months for most enrollees and to one month for expansion enrollees.

Interesting, thanks. Do you know what an expansion enrollee means?

Some states have expanded their Medicaid programs to cover all people with household incomes below a certain level. Others haven’t.Whether you qualify for Medicaid coverage depends partly on whether your state has expanded its program.
- In all states: You can qualify for Medicaid based on income, household size, disability, family status, and other factors. Eligibility rules differ between states.
- In states that have expanded Medicaid coverage: You can qualify based on your income alone. If your household income is below 133% of the federal poverty level (FPL), you qualify. (Because of the way this is calculated, it turns out to be 138% of the federal poverty level. A few states use a different income limit.)

Yup. They want you to believe fraud is the reason for the cuts but it isn't. The recent major federal Medicaid cuts are largely attributed to a political push to reduce overall federal spending, rather than solely to address fraud. While tackling fraud is a stated goal, the actual legislative provisions that account for most of the reductions target coverage and eligibility rules for beneficiaries. - In other words they changed who is eligible so that fewer people are eligible.

The rhetoric coming out of the White House on this is either inaccurate, misleading, or wishful thinking. To think a trillion in Medicaid cuts isn't going to affect all of us and only will affect fraudsters or immigrants is ridiculous. All news source that aren't Trump alligned have been reporting this. Experts, doctors, administrators, lawyers etc are all bracing for impact that the administration won't admit is coming, and Trump has cleverly kicked these implications off until after the midterms. Health care experts say that lower hospital and nursing home reimbursements will be insufficient for many states, and that cuts to home and community based care are likely, and that people should prepare for both hospitals and care facilities to close in 2027. We are headed for a crisis, and I would listen to your attorney although there is very little any of us can do on an individual level. But I would listen to an attorney who went to school for this and not random Fox News viewers on this site. The misinformation is incredible, and unfortunately people are going to find out the hard way. Our elders will pay the price.

I am hopeful that our loved ones with dementia and even the elderly in general are without question in need. There is no way they are capable of working to support themselves. Unfortunately I don’t know if that will make any difference. Even if funding for nursing home care is decreased then the care our loved ones receive will be of lower quality. It’s scary.
