Hello - I am new to the community and working to arrange 24 hour care in home for an older brother who likely has dementia (evaluations are underway and he just moved to a rehab setting from a hospital). We need to have him live on the first floor when he returns and wondered if a hospital type bed is necessary. He is able to get in and out of bed, walk to the bathroom etc without assistance (currently).

If he is truly able to get in and out of bed and walk without assistance you do not need a hospital bed right now. The physical therapist at rehab will be able to advise you on what he needs at home to be discharged to home safely. But you really do not need a bed so high that he needs a step stool to get on it. At some point if he remains at home you might need a hospital bed for safety and caregiving reasons, but right now be guided by the physical therapist and also think about providing familiar surroundings and a routine.
