NOT DRIVING!

My wife who is three years into FTD announced this morning she intends to go driving. I told her that was not happening because her neurologist had written in her report she was not to drive and our insurance would be invalid. This, among many other reasons were enough to keep her off the road. Likely she will forget it all by tomorrow.

My DH who is stage 6, bought a white Jeep when he retired. In 2024 he had a stroke that rendered him unable to stand or walk. I sold his Jeep to a family member so I could buy a wheelchair van. He never mentioned or asked about the Jeep until last week. We were taking a drive and he saw a car just like his. He says, I have a white Jeep. I was stunned by that. I thought he had totally forgotten about his car.
Prior to his stroke it was a struggle getting him to give up driving. I bought a look a like fob of the Jeep and put it on his keychain to replace the real one. He never tried the fake fob, but I think it relieved stress just seeing it. As he’s progressed, he stopped talking about driving.

My DW occasionally says, "I have to get out of here." I took all the car key fobs and hid them. She has never tried to leave.

After DW was diagnosed, she voluntarily agreed to stop driving (I was lucky). For the next year or two, when I would drive her in her car, she would sometimes mention that she would like to drive her car again. I would politely agree and tell her we can set up some time later in the week for her to practice. Fortunately she would forget and that was that. She would bring it up a few weeks later and I would repeat. Of course I never intended to let her drive. Agreeing with her in the moment seemed to make her content rather than confronting her with the reality that she will never drive again.
