My wife has a prescription for Lorazepam as needed for anxiety. She has taken it a few times and it has helped but today she was upset so the MC gave her the Lorazepam and she Had hallucinations and delusions most of the day. She was talking to people that were not there. She was happy, so that is good. She has had some hallucinations and delusions for several years but this lasted longer and was more intense. Like I said she was happy but has anyone had Lorazepam cause this or was it more likely a coincidence and progression.

Thank you.

My DW also takes Lorazepam for anxiety and has not had this reaction. But her daughter warned me it is contraindicated. Maybe that is why? Hope others have more information.

People can have a parodoxical reactions to benzodiazepines. We had a family member with dementia who would get extremely agitated if given benzos. We put a note in their medical record that they were allergic to the medication (not exactly true but the staff was more likely to avoid trying medications if you said there was an allergy vs just having a bad reaction).

My DW was just prescribed 0.25mg of Alprazolam for anxiety as needed. It has worked wonders so far.

If the behavior already exists absent the med, my best guess is it's the progression.

if you look up lorazepam, you will see that one of the warnings or side effects can be memory loss. Maybe that’s why it is contraindicated. As to the hallucinations, you would need to talk to her doctor, but I would guess it’s progression.

My LO had worsening hallucinations for months before starting lorazepam, which has been a Godsend for us.
