Rationales for PT for late stage in MC?

My dad in MC is sleeping most of the time. I recently had a care meeting with the facility director. When I mentioned in passing that he is seeming weaker, she said that maybe PT would help. I said, “Huh, maybe,” and we went on to other things. Fast forward a week, and I am getting email from a PT agency affiliated with the facility asking me to fill out forms, call the insurance for preapproval, etc.

This is looking like drumming up business to bill Medicare, and I am skeptical that PT would be of much use to my dad. At the same time, I am as susceptible as anybody to the desire to feel that I’m doing absolutely everything I can for his care.

But I am in touch with his PCP, who has not mentioned PT since we did that last summer (with a different agency, not affiliated with the MC).

I have pretty much decided to say no to this, so I guess I don’t need advice as much as I need just to reach out to people who will understand the frustration, uncertainty, and guilt. These days are hard enough.

I was given the choice of either PT or hospice for my wife with dementia. The difference is in the quality of life. PT is a lot of work and is hard on the patient. Hospice is geared to improving life by making it easier.

I agree with you on saying no to PT. My wife will sometimes sleep for long periods during the day. I feel this is good for her. I know part of the reason for her sleeping is the medicines she takes. The nurse that visits my wife 2-3 times a week sees no problem with her sleeping during the day.

You are correct to say no. I found that PT and OT were not helpful for my DH. After 2 visits the therapists stopped them. A PWD cannot follow directions or remember the exercises to do between visits. I would ask for a hospice evaluation instead. They will re-evaluate him every 6 months.

We found dad enjoyed the attention of the PT who worked with him in MC. He never really bonded with any of the residents, but enjoyed "working out" with the PT. It's hard to say if the PT helped him physically or not but he enjoyed the visits.
