massage or facials for ALZ moms
Do any of you have any experience with your LO getting a massage or a facial at a spa? I was gifted an hour massage, followed by an hour facial today. It was heaven and I couldn't help thinking, during the facial, if my mom could have a facial and enjoy it. I'm not sure she ever has had one (professionally). I know that as people age they get touched less, especially after their spouse passes. Our elderly can be touch-deprived.
(Don't judge me), but I'm not the person for the job, am not the touchy type. I don't have that kind of relationship with my mom. But I don't know even if she said she'd want it, how she would cope for the hour and how her ALZ would impact her. She is at a mild-mod level. If I took her, I'd want to stay in the room, in case she had questions or problems. I just don't know. Her birthday is in August, and I was thinking it might be a nice family gift to her . . . but maybe not.

I think it would be too much sensory input. In many facilities, caregivers rub lotion on backs and sometimes arms/legs after a bath or shower, and I think that's enough.

Not everyone enjoys that type of thing - Alz or not. I had a massage one time many years ago and did not find it to be a pleasant experience. I definitely would not enjoy a facial. If it’s not something that you know she has enjoyed in the past, I don’t think that now would be a good time to give it a go.

My mom used to love pedicures/manicures. I took her to a salon with the thought that it would be relaxing, and also, she needed a professional. Nail care is definitely not in my wheelhouse. She was irritated, kinda rude to the technician, and said a few things she should not have. She did, however, advocate for herself about any pain she experienced during the process, so I was glad for that. Not sure how a facial would go over.
