Advice needed to get Mom to agree to medicine management

Tomorrow we are meeting with the nurses at my Mom's AL facility to transition her medication management. Up until now my Mom has managed it herself but has been missing or mixing up doses from her pill box. She is very angry that this is taking place as "she can do it fine by herself". Any words of wisdom to get us over this hump would be helpful. Thanks.

If it were me, I would say it’s a policy change the facility is making and they are now administering everyone’s meds. “Sorry mom, it’s out of my hands now, nothing I can do, medical director is ordering this now, etc.”

Another variation is that some residents do need help so the facility decided to do it for everyone because that’s what’s safest/easier for them/everyone is treated the same, etc.

This was one of the hardest things for my mother when she transitioned into AL. She was pretty angry when they took away her pills. Two months later, she accepts it, but every once in awhile if they bring her medicine late or something, she starts up again…. I like the idea of telling her that it's just a new policy, nothing you can do about it.

Can you tell her that it’s included in her fee- and surely she wants to get her money’s worth? Fib about it if you have to.

These have been great tips. You could even use that the 'state' changed the law - can you believe it, route. That way maybe she won't take it out on the facility. (I use 'the state' on several things for my mom and it worked each time.)
