Vision in left eye
We had noticed that my FIL was having issues with what seemed to be his vision, squinting, rubbing his left eye and then Saturday evening we were watching tv and my husband said he was sitting there with his left eye closed. He had a scheduled eye appointment at the VA yesterday and apparently he has Ischemic Optic neuropathy in that left eye and from what my SIL said, he has lost almost all vision. It is caused by lack of blood flow and oxygen to the optic nerve. Doctor said it could be from high/low blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea of which he suffers from all 3.
He fell in 2020 and hit his head, they thought his blood pressure went low and that caused the fall. He was in the hospital but CT scans didn’t show anything, then a couple of months later he started exhibiting signs of what I thought were mini strokes, he had a brain bleed and had to have surgery to stop it. I don’t feel like he has ever been the same since and MIL told me his primary thought his fall contributed to his dementia, which leads me to think it is possibly vascular dementia. Which then leads me to think this condition in his eye is linked to the dementia. It is like putting a jigsaw puzzle together trying to figure out what all he has going on. Not really sure how much he truly understands but I definitely see his cognitive age dropping and more searching for words or just getting them wrong. Some of the things he says and does you just have to laugh about, others just make you want to cry.
