Just thinking ahead a bit—it's so hard to gauge. We have several excellent caregivers, and I kind of hate to think of telling them "Well, he's gone, bye." What do you think about telling them we'll give them 2 weeks pay afterwards so they're not left in the lurch?

It all depends on situation. If the caregivers are through an agency, they will be assigned elsewhere.

We have a wonderful person, not through an agency, and she is now leaving to go to help family. Although the regular pay is through long-term insurance (she qualifies), we plan to give a gift-card to a popular store as a thank you for all she's done. She has been sooooo good with mom-in-law… With family, she will no longer have pay, so I guess the gift-card would be some compensation for all she's done.

I think that's a lovely thing to do. Even if they do get another assignment right away, it rewards them for their loyalty and care and shows how valuable they have been to you and your entire family.

We kept them on the payroll after to help pack up personal items for the sale of the home.

There were a couple of special aides at my mom’s memory care that I gave each $100 and a card after my mom died.
