We had a scare recently. Sometimes we don't know whether what is happening is mental or physical. She was feeling like her leg was underwater, her feet were cold. It was very disconcerting. I suspected it was mental because the symptoms were so odd. The doctor agreed with me. We just had to let it ride. Her voice is different when she is a child, a person in charge or sometimes herself. This morning she was the person in charge. She wanted to know if there was anything I wanted. The answer at that time was to get away from everyone. I didn't tell her that. A little while later she asked me if there was something I wanted that was out of reach. I told her my bucket list was to go to Reykjavik to see the Aurora Borealis. She was going to try to get it for me. She asked specific questions about the when and how. That was the saddest thing. Mom makes cameo appearances in the strangest ways. The appearances are brief and short lived but there.

I would try to enjoy all the cameos your Mom makes. My DW used to make them but not so much anymore. I miss them.

YoU described really well how disconcerting the personality changes can be with dementia. It’s really jarring and sad - especially when the person you’ve known all those years makes a cameo occasionally. It gets less so, and you may find yourself getting used to her new ways of being. It doesn’t get easy, but you get accustomed to it. Hopefully you still have moments of connection - that’s what has happened for me and my mom.
