Greetings and question about stove safety
The short version: Has anyone tried "smart" knobs for a stove such as the TochTech SmartTurns, or other stove safety products?
The long version: Some of you may remember I was a contributor here for years while caring for my mom with Alz. This forum was such a blessing when I was starting out. She's been gone since 2022 and now I'm sort of going through it again with my elderly dad. It isn't quite the same, his situation seems far more like age related brain shrinkage and just a general fading (He's 87.) Truly just being forgetful sometimes, not personality changes or things like that. I wouldn't be surprised if there was some level of TIAs or vascular stuff at play given his other conditions, but so far that hasn't risen to any point of a dementia diagnosis. I have had to step in with a few things like making sure bills are paid on time and I oversee the weekly filling of the pill dispenser. He voluntarily gave up driving a few years ago. I'm fortunate to live just a few blocks away as does my sibling. We bring him dinners to heat up in this toaster oven (which only works on a timer function), but he likes to use his (electric) stove for breakfast and the some other random things. He occasionally leaves a burner on too long, scorching pans until they are totally black etc and I'm concerned about a fire. He will turn it on and then go sit in his chair and fall asleep. I'm hoping to find a temporary solution until things change to where he truly can't live alone. He isn't to the point yet where I could force him to move or a doctor would declare him incompetent. I have tried getting him to use other things (electric tea kettle, induction burner with an off timer etc) but he really can't learn new technology or habits, it just didn't click. I am not concerned about other safety issues yet like scammers or knowing how to call 911. So far it is just the stove as a safety issue. Has anyone here tried "smart" knobs for a stove? I was looking at the Toch brand, a Canadian company. It seems like they look just like the normal knobs and will beep loudly if the person walks away for too long and no motion is detected, and will also text a caregiver when they are left on. The beeping would be enough for him I think, his hearing is great, but the added layer of it contacting me if he didn't turn it off would be nice. They are expensive enough I am hesitant to order them without some intel and I can't find much for independent reviews. If they aren't junk they seem like a good solution for me. The other option is a smart outlet but that seems harder, unless I am missing something. It would have to be tied to my phone, and I don't know how that would work for turning it on and off for the window of time he needed to use it.
