More on data centers. Heard last night they are going to.build a big one about 20 miles west of here at the edge of a town. Mike just told me they were voted out of building another one not too away so they' re going to make the one close to me bigger. I have a friend just across the road from this one so he will get more noise and pollution. One building is going to.cover 35 acres, the size of our hay meadow. He said he could see a building from the highway so guess that's the data center.

Mike called to see if Billy was still up- he is going to move his cows across the road to the section east of us to graze on crab grass until we have a killing frost. Asked him to come by when be could to check Billy's foot. I'm not sure it is footrot. He may move them in a couple of days so probably will need to get more feed for Billy. I want to.get my flu shot next week so can do it then if I.can get an appt. I fed Billy and the outside cats a while ago and I think I heard a cat meow. Something eats food and drinks water every night. I hope they're still out there. It is a beautiful day!!

GG, if you cannot locate the goth garden article, try this.

HB - I like the idea of a family of skeletons sitting around a campfire.

Iris - I couldn't see the goth garden article in the Press-Telegram, it's subscription only. But I was able to see your other link, and I love it. Thank you for sending it my way! I showed it to my s.o., and he reminded me that we have a wedding anniversary coming up. 🙂

    Lorita - Data centers. 😒

Quiet day here. I spent most of it doing my weekend household cleaning. I talked to Peggy's friend D again today on the phone - her words are less slurred, which I take as a good sign. We talked about our old home town (in southern CA), and how much we liked it there. She's still in southern California, about an hour away from where we used to live.

It rained this morning, although we had some sun this afternoon. I ended up raking up the first round of leaves. My s.o. will get the next round.

It's Halloween all year long at my place (I know everyone is shocked by this). I have my few Little Apple Dolls scattered about. I was looking for links, but ended up resorting to someone's blog. If you scroll down you'll see the ones I have: Animula, Sine of Souls (my favorite), and Ianua. They're about 12 inches tall or so.

I also have a few gargoyles keeping watch.

There may be a small skeleton or two.

on our way home from a beautifully moving ceremony at Arlington. And a longtime burden of duty has been lifted. I’m at peace now that father in law is resting with his wife.

Will spend time with dear aunt who is home with Hospice. And Uncle who has follow up appointments this week.

    looking forward to home ❤️

Good afternoon. It's the perfect fall day here. Peak leaf color seems a week or so late although the maples are doing their thing.

Lorita— Fall is here is you had to turn on the heat. We got frost overnight but I resisted the urge to turn the furnace on. It was 64F in the house when I woke up so not too cold yet.

I hope your baking came out well.

Judith— Mom likes the humidifier in the bi-pap. Without it she complains of dry eyes, skin and nose. I'd be just as happy to lose the feature as I am the one hauling all the distilled water for it.

Her sleep study kit will be delivered tomorrow so we should know whether she still needs it. She's not done a sleep study with this practice and her records from previous tests are missing. There's some confusion about whether she has OSA or CSA (central sleep apnea).

Carl— "Cowgirl" seems like quite a character.

Beth— My neighborhood has so many of these skeleton tableaux. I always wonder where folks store all this holiday paraphernalia. I have a full unfinished basement and wouldn't have room for half the crap some people put out for Halloween much less the Christmas decor and all the themed wreaths. SMH.

Today's exercise was an abbreviated walk in the park. Literally. I wanted to keep going but DH was with me and not up to it. I am glad he joined me. I managed a mile easily and even had a 48' elevation in the walk. I feel like the effects of the nebivolol are wearing off— I got my HR into the 90s without feeling like I was completely out of breath. So yay!

This was taken at the high point of my walk.

Beautiful dsy here but still a bit chilly.outside . were staying mostly in the bedroom where I have an electric heater going. I woke up to.truck sounds and barking cattle. They moved the cattle across to a grassy 160 for a few weeks. Already lonesome here. One truck got top close to the pond and got stuck.

Mike came by to.check on Billy. Billy wouldn't let him get.close so gave him some feed and he was able to.get a good look at his foot. It isn't footrot but is a corn. Cows have two toes and it's between them. If he's walking on smooth ground he does pretty well but if he steps on a rock.or gets in the mud the corn is aggravated and hurts. Just like us if we have a corn. He says on show cattle he can cut out the corn, medicate it and bandage it but doesn't do that on beef cattle. So, that is why he walks okay at times and limps other time. Had a good visit with him and learned more about data centers. He hates them as much as I do. There are at.least five if them within 25 miles of us.

The Shootist with John Wayne is coming on tv.We saw it in 1976 in Hot Springs when my parents and Charles and I went on a !little trip. Kind of a sad show so won't watch it again.

Kind of hungry so need to find something to eat. The repairman is coming tomorrow to fix my washer. Will be glad to get that done. There is a slight tinge of yellow on some trees and the Bermuda grass II s a paler green than before the cool weather. Enjoy the day.

Iris - It would not surprise me if goth flowers showed up for our anniversary. 🙂

I got up late this morning, and sat in bed reading a Rolling Stone interview with Danny Hutton, one of the lead singers for '60s-'70s band, Three Dog Night. I always loved those guys. The interview (long), was a fantastic read. He knew positively everyone back in the day. If you have nothing to do, and liked that band, give it a read. That guy has a million stories - plus, he seems like a nice person.

    I'll be back later.

Well, I did watch The Shootist. So many good actors in it. Took me back to happier times when I wasn't the last of the Langtons. Now, I need to take down the trash and move the water tank so Billy won't have to walk in water to.drink, then let him out. He has mowed the grass north and west of the house so he needs to work on the pasture now.. Need to get into town for sweet feed for him and get gas. I may wait until next week to get my flu shot.

GG, I also liked Three Dog Night.

My cpap only plugs into my nose. It has a water tank but I've never had to use it. Some people get nosebleeds without water, but for me it dries out my sinuses so that I don't get sinus congestion anymore, but not so much that I get nosebleeds. Lucky me.

Three Dog Night was a great band IMO. Their "Joy to the World" was featured in "The Big Chill" which itself was sort of an anthem to the baby boomer middle class. My father in law hated that movie, because he was of the WWII generation and was disgusted by the drug use and promiscuity celebrated in the movie.

Some people are afraid of data centers and AI, thinking that they will soon be more intelligent than humans and decide to exterminate us. Others think they will give all the work to robots and we will live in a socialist paradise, or that they will simply cut off electricity to humans and watch us devolve to feudalism with a greatly reduced population ala "The Walking Dead". We probably should regulate AI but the anti-intellectual faction is in control of our government so nothing is being done, in the US anyway. China might be firmly in control of their AI and ahead of us in quantum computing, which raises other chilling possibilities.

On a brighter note, I see the Chiefs won again and are one of the three undefeated teams in the NFL 🏈

Billy has to be the luckiest steer on the planet. Most steers his age hit the slaughterhouse a decade ago, but he's a pampered pet. Sorry about his corn, those really hurt.

Carl and Lorita - That Rolling Stone article is for you! Great info about Three Dog Night, plus a million great stories by Danny Hutton. He's a great storyteller, btw. I tended to like the songs that Cory Wells sang - Never Been to Spain, Mama Told Me Not To Come, etc.

Carl - I liked The Big Chill, as well as The Breakfast Club. I'm kind of at an in-between age - even though I'm a boomer, I'm on the younger side, and even though I wasn't in high school in the '80s, I somehow relate better to that age group. Maybe it's the alternative goth thing.

My dad didn't like The Big Chill for the same reason.

Lorita - I'm sorry about Billy. How come they can't cut out the corn? I'm not quite following why they wouldn't.

HB - That hike you were on looks gorgeous.

Today was fairly restful. It was overcast in the morning, but we got a bit of sun this afternoon, but man, it's downright chilly right now. I'm wearing one of my heavier sweaters.

Now I'm just prepping for the week.

Much as I like the music of Three Dog Night, their name always reminds me of an old man I met in the Ozarks many years ago. When the January wind was howling around his uninsulated shack and the ground was frozen, it was a three-dog night and he kept warm by letting all three of his dogs into his bed 😄

I had an ingrown toenail once and I was in a LOT OF PAIN with every step. I feel for Billy!

I'm still coughing but less. Two thirds of Covid patients can have a lingering cough, which can last for 32 weeks, according to one large study. I seem to cough when I talk, so I have not been talking much.

I'm turning in now. Good night.

Hello Ramona and Welcome. You could get very good information on steps you need to take by starting your own thread rather than posting to "…Friends on the porch" here. We can help, but if you create your own thread there are many, many people who will chime in to help.

That being said, here are a few brief tips for you.

Get legal affairs in order. Contact an elder law attorney and work on your POAs and discuss finances for financing memory care/skilled nursing etc, which he may need at some point. Don't delay. Once he is too compromised to sign documents, you would have to get conservatorship or guardianship for this.

Driving is an issue with dementia patients. They might seem ok at it but executive function is a concern and the person could get lost. Some insurers might not cover an accident if someone diagnosed with dementia is the driver.

Read all you can. "The 36 Hour Day" is a good resource. Videos by Teepa Snow on YouTube are helpful too.

Take over the finances. One person with dementia day traded away over $300,000 - he needs to lose access to the accounts. Go talk with a banker, your finance people etc. Change passwords so he cannot get into the accounts.

If anger is an issue, there is potential for violence. This doesn't always happen but be prepared. Remove any firearms from your property. Keep a charged cell phone with you at all times. Have a way to escape, perhaps to a room with a lock on the door.

    Best wishes, Beth

    Good morning,

Trying to catch up on my washing and out of breath even with my oxygen tank on me. I start pulmonary rehab Wednesday and praying it will help some.

Finally have blood pressure under control but now I feel like I did in the 60s with a buzz on, just enough to get me light headed, but not out.

Ramona, welcome to Lorita’s front porch. A lot of friends and good advice.

    Welcome Ramona….

The what do I do now is very hard. Actually this whole illness is hard but you will learn how to make it as easy as possible.

You are going to have practical matters, legal matters and care matters.

First step is to get a notebook.

    1. Then open it and write down every bill that needs paying from electricity to martrgage. Then you need a way to pay them…online or mailed check. Then be certain that you have a credit card or a bank account with checks. Note: many bills can be set up to be paid automatically.
    2. Set up a section for medical care…Drs and meds
    3. third section will be for legal advice

Get a copy of The 36 Hour Day.

Go to alz.org and read everything….if there is something you do not understand write it down. We will be glad to help…we understand and we care!

We've had a lot of three dog nights, literally, but it was more like 12 poodles, when we.lived in an all electric MH and were out of power for two weeks because of an ice storm.

GG, Billy probably weighs close to a ton and only has vision in one eye so he's afraid.Mike once got.him in a pen to give him a shot and he was scared and whirled around and around until he broke out. The surgery to cut out the corn Is really involved and has to be medicated and bandaged. It would be too dangerous plus he.is scared of Mike and anyone except me. Cattle can be gentle if you're around them but not to strangers. I feel sorry for him, too, but he deals with it.

Welcome, Ramona, glad you're trying to learn what's in store for.both of you. I was in the same situation 18 years ago when Charles was diagnosed and I had no idea what to expect. Beth and Judith gave you very good advice about everything. I know it's overwhelming but you can deal with it. We're here to help.

Ron, hope you're feeling better today. Sorry you're having such a hard time.

Waiting for the sears repairman - supposed to.be here between 8 and 5.

Repairman got here st 4:15. He couldn't find anything wrong with the washer said it was a glitch and showed me what to do if it happens again. Now I have to do laundry! Stormy really watched every move the guy made. Haven't seen Billy since morning but I know he's out there and will be out front for feed in the morning.

    I'll say good night now.

Nothing like living in the country is right! A deer ran across the road in front of me a few minutes ago, far enough that there was no danger, but I had to brake for the dog that was right behind her. No need to go to town for night life!

Hi Ramona - Welcome! Beth and jfkoc have given you some great advice. I second all of it.

Lorita - About Billy — I know next to nothing about cattle. For some reason it never occurred to me that they could weigh almost a ton. It all makes sense to me now. Honestly, the closest I've ever been to cattle at all is driving on the freeway looking at them graze on the hills.

I had my last pre-surgery eye scans today. It was just measuring. I also got my pre and post-surgery care kit. There are two sets of eye drops I have to take. I have to start one set of drops two days before surgery and continue with it for 14 days after. The other set is for the day of the surgery. It's an antibiotic + it dilates your eyes. I have to take it an hour before the surgery, then 40 min before, and then 20 min before. So that's what I know right now. I'm scheduled for Oct. 28 & Nov 11. I could do the second one earlier, but I have a dentist appointment and a couple of other things that week that can't be changed. And my dentist is booked almost a year in advance, so I'm not changing that appointment!

Since I won't be able to go to gym for awhile, I'm doing a "boot camp" this week. I'll work out with my trainer every day this week. Daunting, but I know I can do it.

Now I'm just catching up on a few things, listening to music at Death Guild, and in general, winding down.

Not leaving it, it's Billy's feed and be might leave a few grains pushing it out of his pan. Anyway, I read that opossums eat rodents! Never knew that.

I saw one of the three cats running from the carport to the barn yesterday so guess they gave taken up residence in there.

Carl, one evening just at dark when we were coming home from work a deer ran across the highway and we hit him. Poor thing didn't survive nor did the front of our PU. I saw several deer with a couple of fawns north of the house at the south end of the meadow a few weeks ago. Used to see them grazing with the girls.

GG, Billy is a steer so he is bigger than most cows, at least Angus - some breeds are bigger. We used to have Brangus and they were big. Casper and Jasper, Billy's father and grandfather were Brangus. Jasper weighed 2200 lbs. and very gentle because we fooled with him. We could walk up to.him and he would give us sugar. Still miss them. Saw Billy grazing this morning. I imagine he misses the girls.

GG, that eye drop regime sounds complicated. When I have to give medicine to animals I keep a chart to.be sure I don't miss a dose. I would have to do the same.

Dear Aunt is actively dying. My heart is breaking.

Her DIL is so beside herself. She's afraid and I've spent time with her this morning trying to reassure and support.

I've been up since 3:30 am cooking for the entire family. No matter how many times you do this, it still hurts so deeply. I'll be glad when she is at rest. Our Matriarch. God Speed.
