Seeking Advice on Affordable Home Repairs to Help Support My Mother's Care

Hello everyone,

I am relatively new to this forum and I'm hoping someone in this community might have advice or recommendations based on a similar experience. I do apologize if this is an inappropriate posting.

I'm the primary caregiver for my elderly mother, who has Alzheimer's disease and leukemia. We live in Monmouth County, New Jersey, and my wife and I are planning to have my mother move in with us so we can better support her ongoing care needs. Selling her current home would help provide much-needed financial resources for her medical expenses and long-term care.

Unfortunately, the house needs several repairs before we can put it on the market, including interior painting, ceiling and window frame repairs from previous water leaks, and basement mold remediation. Between her medical expenses and the significant costs of caregiving, our financial resources are already stretched thin.

I'm hoping to learn whether anyone knows of nonprofit organizations, community programs, affordable contractors, or other resources that might offer free or reduced-cost assistance with these repairs.

I realize many home repair assistance programs focus on helping seniors remain in their homes rather than preparing a property for sale, but I'm hopeful there may be other options worth exploring.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. I would be truly grateful for any advice, recommendations, or experiences you're willing to share.

Oliver

You could try Habitat for Humanity and they may be able to direct you if they cannot help. It sounds like your property needs extensive work and you should also talk to a good real estate agent who can advise. It might be more realistic to sell as an ‘as is’ property and forget about repairs.
