Help with dog surgery

Hi,

My dog, Bob, had his anal glands removed on Tuesday. My DH doesn’t understand why he needs to wear a cone. DH thinks it’s cruel. Any ideas on what to do? I’m worried that as soon as I leave the house he will take Bob’s cone off. This could be very dangerous if Bob chews the area.

Your options seem to be boarding the dog until the cone can safely be removed, stay home/in the room and potentially battle over keeping the cone on or bring your husband with you whenever you leave the room/house.

BTDT. Ours had a corneal ulcer and I spent a week repeating the instructions every hour or two. If you husband does insist on removing the cone, can you try doggy diapers or something like that to protect the area? I've seen people put on a child's sweatshirt over the hind legs and somehow tie it around their midsection... not sure how it would hold up to a determined dog, but if you really can't keep the cone on it might be an option.

We made it through a week with the cone until I finally gave in! I think my partner was more miserable than the dog.

As a retired veterinarian, I can't help but be on the side of the dog . Boarding would be a great option if you can't keep the dog in sight at all times. You definitely don't want that area to get infected, as that would be much worse than dealing with the cone. This disease complicates all areas of our lives, that's for sure.

They are inflatable but most have a fabric covering. There are several on Amazon or you can find them in most pet shops

They are bulky enough to keep most dogs from licking their behind, but still allows them to drink from their water bowls.

Best is that they aren’t as annoying to the dog and don’t look cruel our dog used it as a pillow. Maybe your DH would be more agreeable to leaving it on the dog.
