Norovirus outbreak at my mom's MC
My mother is 86 and lives in MC. I just got word that there is an outbreak there at her facility and that my mother is involved. I hope it passes soon but concerned how this could affect my elderly and frail mother.

Norovirus is a very difficult virus to eradicate because it spreads through respiratory droplets as well as by contact. This is very unusual for a GI virus. I’d put a mask on her and have her stay in her room as much as possible

You should also wear a mask and avoid the public spaces, especially the dining areas, if you visit. Norovirus is miserable. I picked it up in the dining room of my husband’s MC. And, of course, sanitizing hands is always important.
As far as your Mom, dehydration is a big concern with NV.

I, too, hope it passes soon. My mom’s MC just went through another COVID outbreak (she was one of the ones who had it) and it was not easy. While she did have to quarantine in her room, staff were phenomenal and we all got through it. Hopefully it will pass soon. It was hard, but the quarantine for her until she tested negative was worth it. Safety always first.

How in the world do they get MC residents to stay in their rooms? I ask because there is currently a covid outbreak at my mom's MC also. I was there just a few days before we were notified of the outbreak, and I saw no isolation signs OR masks. When she was in AL at the same facility, they posted isolation signs and kept sick residents in their rooms. But at MC very few of them will understand, recall or comply with such restrictions.

@psg712 great question and I’m so sorry your moms place has it too. I think it’s just unavoidable at this point, at least once per year. Do you know how many residents had it?
At my mom’s, I think 4 residents tested positive. It did take intensive staff focus. And per one person mom was literally out of her room every 3 seconds lol. BUT… I think it still helped having her there. She ate meals in her room, etc. Unlike the much larger AL parts of the place, she could open her door and basically see everything so it wasn’t so traumatic. It’s a much better layout because even in “quarantine” she was much less isolated. But every place is different. Not sure the best way to handle. It’s such a disruption.

As of Wednesday, there were 9 residents and 3 staff testing positive in mom's MC. Total capacity is 24 residents so it's a significant outbreak. Mom had it back in November, leading to a hospital and rehab stay (total of 2 months out of her community) so I am praying she has enough residual immunity from that episode to keep her safe in this outbreak. They are testing all residents every five days.

Ooooffff god yes I think it’s everywhere. It also really affected my mom when she got it - not so much physically but it exacerbated her symptoms. Thankfully she’s much better. That’s great they are testing everyone every 5 days. I don’t think my mom’s place is (similar capacity for MC). I hope your mom has the immunity too, and that this passes quickly.
