Televising Without Sound
My DH will sit by the hour and watch television without the sound turned on. Has anyone else had this experience?

yes. They can’t follow conversations or plots. Very common. My DH liked old westerns. Some like musicals or music videos.

My DW doesn't really watch TV anymore. She does like youtube videos of concerts if she is familiar with the music.

I do that myself sometimes. Some shows are better that way.

DH will watch with no sound or even picture. Because he can’t really work the remote, he’ll sometimes navigate to some channel we don’t get and just stare at that message for a while. It’s just sad…

I wish my DH wouldn’t turn the sound on. The minute he gets up the tv is on. Sometimes I will ask him if he really wants to watch the YouTube video he has on, because I don’t want to hear it. Even though he’s looking at the tv he will tell me he wasn’t paying attention. He has watched this one video so many times I can almost recite verbatim what the narrator says. Thank goodness the guy has a melodic voice and I can tune it out and read.

DH always had a low tolerance for noise. As he progressed, I think trying to follow the pictures on the screen and deciphering the dialogue were simply too much for his brain to process simultaneously.

My DH watched all the old westerns, with the sound so low, but had watched them so many times he knew what they were saying. It kept him entertained.

My dad doesn't process anything on tv. He is hard of hearing so he just looks at the pictures on tv.

Yes, my DH watches the rodeo every night - and never turns the sound on. The one thing that he wants to listen to is music. We have our "concert night" every Friday night for about 3 - 4 hours nonstop. I play music and we sing. He loves the music and remembers the words to most songs. I started this about a year ago when I read they can often relate to music even when they don't remember who you are. He gets excited when I tell him its concert night.

My DH does both. He's hard of hearing, so he will turn the TV, yes, more than one, until I tell him he has to stop it. It drives me crazy, having the TV on as loud as ever or turned down so low I know he can't hear it, but I like it better, turned down low. Sometimes, he has it on and does not pay any attention. He'll get up from one spot, walk into another room, and leave the TV and lights on. I've gotten to the point I turn it off and not say anything because it doesn't help. Our electric bill is steadily increasing, but as much as I keep explaining, it doesn't register. It seems hopeless.

Ha! I didn't want to 'fess up…I do it all the time…I just want to turn my brain off and not think about what horrible thing might come next so I turn on a youtube on the tv and let it run with no sound. I do agree that some shows are better that way!
