Medicaid and Nursing Homes: Not Political: Just Necessary to Speak Our

I depend on this site for emotional support. It also has made me aware how lucky I am that my husband and I had good jobs and were super savers. I just finished a meeting with a money guy who went over my finances. He walked me through how I can afford good private memory care for my DH without complete exhausting the money on which I will depend to live. I realize how tough it is for other folks to find care through no fault of their own. Among them is a cousin who lives in a Medicaid funded nursing home. She worked her whole life.

That is one reason I have spent an hour every morning this week contacting congresspeople to speak against Medicaid cuts that literally were happening in the dead of last night. Complain about this being political if you like. However, so many folks with AZ in nursing homes are on Medicaid. We need well funded nursing homes. The cavalry is not coming, but we have the power to speak up. The is not a red or blue issue. It is a red, white and blue concern. You can google the Energy and Commerce committee phone number.

I know I’m one that says no politics… but… your post is pretty factual as opposed to opinions. Encouraging people to call about this doesn’t seem like a bad thing to me. I just don’t want to see people throwing insults at each other’s beliefs. That’s what I mean when I caution against politics.

I would never insult anyone. This just boggles my mind. I see how people in my support group and here struggle. They need support.

Cutting Medicaid would mean the end of many smalltown hospitals and many nursing homes. Medicaid is what we have instead of a national health system.

If Medicaid is cut thousands and thousands of good people will be hurt. I'm off to make that call.

I'm terrified of having to put DH in a nursing home. We were always savers instead of spenders, but if he has to go into a nursing home, it will probably wipe out everything we've saved. You work hard and save, and this is what it comes down to.

thank you for posting this. I work for Medicaid in my state and understand how the cuts would impact nursing home benefits. I was curious as I make contingent plans for the future how many here rely on Medicaid to cover the costs? What would those families do if they lost that coverage? We are not at that point yet however I know we don’t have the money to cover MC out of pocket. The only way I could do it would be by using Medicaid.

Which DETAILS in the bill are you opposed to? Making people work or go to school if they aren't in the group that gets it for legit health reasons? Eliminating fraud? Cutting coverage for people WITHOUT legal status ? [Green card holders have status ]

You say "I depend on this site for emotional support."

You aren't alone. So to come in here , all smug because you've got bucks and Maddow ramped you up is removing this as a site for emotional support for OTHERS. Didn't think about them, did'ya? Naw, just run with your slogan, brew a latte with those free trade beans and call it a day.

There is a WORLD of internet sites where you can spout a slogan and hang with your NPR types but to come here , words don't fail me, I'm just not expressing them .

I suggest you talk to a CELA. Mine was able to suggest ways in which my wife could qualify for Medicaid without impoverishing me.

    @nopost

Your comments are exactly what I mean by people throwing insults. The author has a right to feel comfortable here. You’ve just made it so she might leave the forum altogether. This is exactly why I objects to politics on this forum

I looked up possible Medicaid cuts and they will only be for able bodied people who refuse to work. Not for those who qualify and are unable to work and need it. Please don’t worry. I’ll find the link and post it.

https://energycommerce.house.gov/posts/chairman-guthrie-delivers-opening-statement-at-full-committee-markup-of-budget-reconciliation-text . The changes will strengthen Medicaid by eliminating fraud and waste. The only people affected will be those who are able bodied. They are going back to work requirements.

upstateAnn, thank you for your post. Sometimes it’s better to be political than complacent, and then surprised when it’s too late to do anything. If anyone hasn’t informed themselves from a variety of sources about what’s at stake here, this would be a good time to do it.

this is NOT a political topic and I wish everyone could keep that in mind. Many people on this group have LO in MC and rely on Medicaid to do so. If this benefit is taken away what will happen to those LO? How will the caregivers deal with this? This is very much an emotional issue. Someone has their hands on the rug we are standing on and we don’t know day to day if they are going to pull it out or not. I feel this is important to discuss contingency plans. There is no carve out in this bill exempting dementia patients.

I feel terrible someone would leave the group but this was only about what do we do if this happens. Very much a support topic not politics

Who determines who is able bodied? And what about those individuals with invisible disabilities?

The goal is to cut Medicaid to make up for the proposed tax cuts.

I’ve read several views on proposals and actual proposals. Some information doesn’t give the entire proposal, just partial takes that can swing opinions either way. My take away is that some people will lose Medicaid, a majority of which didn’t/shouldn’t qualify in the first place. These savings will make Medicaid stronger for those who do need it, elderly, people with disabilities, underprivileged etc. I pray every person with dementia and all that truly need it will have the help they are entitled too and deserve.
Everyone who feels benefits are being taken should absolutely have their voice heard.

I am the parent of an adult child with ASD. I am formerly a moderator for a support and information site related to the spectrum— specifically those individuals with ASD (and other invisible disabilities) who are not intellectually disabled. I know countless families who have struggled to get their children qualified for these programs. It's pretty common to be denied at least once before prevailing.

So yes, there are written regulations. But they're open to interpretation.

Will the loopholes created by hiring a CELA be open to scrutiny? Will those loopholes still exist?

Laws are always subject to change. The IRS in 2023 made a major change in step-in value for properties in irrevocable trusts , I just saw a banner for it float by on a news site last week . Hugh impact for folks who used that approach. https://sharpelaw.com/revenue-ruling-2023-2-clarity-on-irrevocable-grantor-trusts-and-step-up-in-basis/

That's why using an experienced elder law attorney is a good idea- esp one that provides updates.

When my husband's illness showed me the cost involved in his care I took out Long Term Care Insurance. My annual payments are now less than most monthly facility costs.

Cuts to Medicaid????? That's a problem we will have to resolve somehow.
