I woke up about 2:30 and it was raining, still is, and can't go back to sleep.

Good morning, Ron.Guess you can't sleep either. Hope you're okay. I hope everything goes well with selling your house.I have never sold a house and really dread having to deal with selling the farm when the time comes.

Judith, the 25 miles was a typo, should have been 15. I'm about 25 from where I used to work or any town of any size.

Kind of anxious to see Sunday morning news shows to see what they say about the protests and awful murders.

I'm kind of hungry - thinking about scrambled eggs, hash towns and toast. Iris, I had a new toaster delivered. I seldom eat fried foods, really never except hash browns,so am thinking about cooking them in the waffle maker. I have a chopper that makes hash browns in a few seconds so very easy to make them.

Alarm is set for 6 so better try to get nap before then. Still raining and looks like it will be for sometime. Back later today.

Good morning. I'm awake too, maybe because the rain is headed this way. We expect rain starting in a couple of hours and lasting all day.

Eggs and hash browns sounds really good. My mother liked to bake eggs in the microwave. She scrambled an egg, mixed in bits of onion and whatever was in the fridge, and cooked it in a plastic cup. There are probably better choices as to what container to use, but she just used what she had. I don't recall her ever having a toaster. She toasted bread on a cast iron griddle as long as I can remember.

I don't have any eggs. I think I'll make toast and peanut butter and see if I can get some more sleep. TTYL

    Good morning
I’ve always thought I would like to see Oregon also. But since I like to be in my bed when nighttime comes, I may never see it lol.

Ron, I’m guessing things can be set up so that you will not have to drive back for closing. When I bought the house that I live in now, the lady lived in Florida. I never saw them.

Nice to see you on the porch makeitthru11. I’m going to try cooking the kale. I’m getting at the Amish market that way. My mom raised kale before it was popular. I’ve ate it all my life. We always harvested it when it was young and tender. What I’m getting at the Amish is huge and it’s tougher when I cook it. So I have some smoked turkey tails that I wondered what all can I use those with so I think I’m going to cook my kale the way you suggested for the other green. Thank you.

Going to church this morning. This afternoon I’m going to go visit with mom and they’re having a Father’s Day celebration. I thought I’m going to go to that and remember my dad.

hope all of you that dad‘s have a nice day.

Mint,my MIL loved turkey tails. We used to cook them for our Queensland Heelers. I guess we had some when she visited and she tried and loved them. I don't look at anything in the meat counters so not sure they're still around here anymore. Never have eaten kale. I real!y don't care for any greens except spinach. We used to.buy big sacks of it, wilt it, and freeze it to cook later. We used to raise a lot of spinach when we had a garden.

Carl, hope you got back to sleep, ,I didn't so guess I'm up for the day. Still raining here.

My friend only reported that as of 2 days ago. Prior to that, all demonstrations in which he participated were peaceful and non-confrontational.

The events here over the weekend were held without incident.

Well, didn't have the scrambled eggs and hashbrowns, instead had chocolate peanut butter puffs with bananas and almond milk.

Carl the baked eggs your mother made sound good. I have muffin pans you use in the microwave so might try thst. I could freeze them and take one out when I wanted it. We had two inches of rain last night so that's almost three and one half in two days. Flood watches everywhere. Darwin says his creek is out of banks.Water sitting everywhere and the yard is mushy.

I took down the trash late yesterday and there was water over the road in two p!aces so probably flooded this morning. Our driveway has a few puddles and is soft in places where I didn't have work done on it. Grasśhoppers galore, almost an inch !ong now.

    Good morning.

HB, is your friend in Los Angeles? There is discrepancy. The mayor Karen Bass called the events peaceful at the same time that her Chief of Police Jim McDonnell said his officers were overwhelmed. The videos were very disturbing. I was disturbed because chaos was reigning just three miles from my home! I saw it! I'm glad the internet is available today so that people can see with their own eyes what is going on in Los Angeles.

During the 1992 riots, my neighbors and I patrolled our condo complex at night and told rabble-rousers not to torch our home. We could see guys driving up and down the street. It worked for us. But two blocks away, a carpet store was burned to the ground. Nowadays, I don't think my neighbors would band together to protect our home. We are not bonded like we used to be years ago.

I went to the library and found booklets from the State of California on how to prepare for disasters. They were all in Spanish so the librarian searched for a copy for me in English. I had to ask for it.

You mentioned a carpet cleaner on another thread. I went to Home Depot to purchase Kids and Pets carpet cleaner, for pet stains. It really works. But now I will have to try a different brand, so I will try your brand. My two elderly cats who had difficulties in the litter box area are now gone, but I need to be prepared. My cat Adam vomits a lot because he gets hairballs.

Yesterday was Flag Day. I was the only one at my condo complex who put up a flag. It was also Brooklyn Day, which we celebrated when I was a small child with a parade that we children marched in. We also learned to recite a poem about Brooklyn. But alas, Brooklyn Day is no longer celebrated.

Lorita, we always ate kale and other greens growing up, including spinach. In fact, my brother and I used to eat spinach with our hands, like Popeye! We wanted to be strong like him.

Welcome to the front porch, makingitthru.

It's almost afternoon, so Good afternoon fellow Rockers and Rockettes. Lorita your rain has arrived here. It's quite lovely, it dropped the temp and I'll take it.

Happy Father's Day to all you dad's. I don't have anything planned for DH except I was going to bake a cake while Nascar was on. I'd thought about grilling, but not in the rain! We've both given up on thinking we'd hear from our son on holidays like this one. He is far too self-centered to care and he's convinced himself I caused his dad's dementia! Of course he also has convinced himself that every bad decision that he's ever made in his life is my fault also. So he removed himself from our lives. Frankly its fine, he is the one missing time with his father (and me) and someday I pray he figures it out. At 44 you'd think so, but he's headstrong and stubborn so who knows.

I've not had the news on where DH would be exposed to the riots, etc. He would be upset and I don't want that. Like Iris, we hung our flags, US and TX yesterday.

Time to get some lunch on the table. Let's be safe everyone.

Happy Father's day. Ron and Carl. You know I was daddy's Fathers Day present, many moons ago..

I just let Sheena in and it is super muggy. Temp is 76 but humidity is 86%. so not good outside. I went out a couple of days ago to close the stall door and couldn't do it.. The mud was so deep I was afraid I would get stuck. While I was on the porch I saw a cow coming up with a new baby. This said, I was afraid this new baby would get stuck going into the barn. The cow took her baby over under a tree to be in the shade. Anyway I went out amd closed the gate to that pasture so she couldn't come through it and maybe into the barn. The back doors are open but know it's muddy that way, too, but not as far to walk through it. I hope she stays in the shade on more solid ground. I don't remember it being so muddy even outside of the corral. Everywhere a cow has stepped is filled with water. I was glad I had the sorting stick with me to give me balance. Even the yard has standing water. Grasshoppers are hopping everywhere.

Happy Father's Day, Ron and Carl. Hugs to both of you.

JeriLynn. Those grilled burgers sound good, that's what we are having for dinner.

Eaglemom. My son who is 52, also told me to get lost! I did not like his online wife who was very disrespectful to me. It's better to let them go then to deal with all the stress. I'm not against meeting online, sometimes it's just not a good thing.

The weather here in Arizona is very hot. This week 105 to 112. I sure miss my Oregon weather. Right now it's 108, all of you in unsafe weather, be safe.

Hugs to all and enjoy the day. Zetta

Jehjeh, not sure how to do it. Someone told me it can be done. I think I'll grate the potatoes, try to get the moisture out and just put them in and let them brown. I have some kind 'of little electric appliance my cousin told me about that she used to make hashbrowns. It doesn't have the little pockets but should be about the same. Hope it works. I have been making them in a little skillet but had to use oil. Thinking I might not have to use much, if any, oil in the waffle maker. Will let you know.

Zetta, I saw on the news that you all were having really hot weather. Ours is coming this next week. Stay inside and stay cool.

You grate the potatoes then squeeze out the moisture. Fry them with oil and a bit of onion. You do not need any special pan…lol

eaglemom and Zetta - I'm sorry about your difficult children. eaglemom, I think your son and my brother would be best buddies - especially about the bad decisions. 😒 He would pull that stuff with my parents too, and they tended to put up with it. Ugh.

Zetta - I like hot weather but 112 is a little hot for me.

Ron and Carl, I hope you both had a Happy Father's Day.

I called my stepson and left a message. He did not call me for Mother's Day, even though I raised him for a few years and sponsored him to come to America from his country. This is how I know all about immigration. I sponsored him and his father. I had to show my own financial statements to prove that they would not be a drain on American taxpayers. I was happy to do it.

    Beth, what are Freedom Rocks?

I saw a big caterpillar and snapped a photo and did a search. It turns out that this is a monarch butterfly caterpillar! I hope it can continue all the way to become a butterfly. Monarch have been declining in numbers. They eat only milkweed. I believe where I live there is a lot of milkweed.

Judith, I make my hash browns in a small skillet, all in one big patty. I wss thinking using a waffle iron would negate having to keep watching them and flipping them. Do you know how to make potato cakes? I know you use mashed potatoes and a little flour but not sure about an egg. I like potatoes any way they can be cooked.

Iris, we used to have lots of milkweed in the pastures but spraying Jas killed most of them. Occasionally I see a few. I can't remember the last time I saw a Monarch butterfly. We used to see lots of butterflies but not anymore. They have a butterfly garden in Honor Heights Park but have never been. Could you.pick some milkweed and put it and the caterpillar in something to protect it?

I have been watching Doc Martin for the last couple of hours. Old shows but good. I like the British comedies like Last Of the Summer Wine. Our PBS station used to have them on Sunday night but not in a long time.

Sheena loves to.be combed. I.picked up the comb and sat down in the chair and here she came to get combed. I think I have mentioned I'm keeping the pretty, white hair I comb to someday make a little pillow.. Looks like she has gone to the bedroom to go to sleep Don't think I will last much.longer since I lost two or three hours sleep.last night. I'll say good night. Sleep well.

Thank you, group. I went back to sleep and slept most of the day. I was so sleepy that people were commenting on how tired I looked, so I needed it.

My son called to wish me a happy Father's Day. I have been forgiven the errors I made as a father, just as I forgave my father his errors, and I am sorry for the sons and stepsons who can't put the past behind them. Most of us fathers could have done better but we can't do it now.

DW's sister called to see how I was getting along. She's having a new A/C installed tomorrow, but we're going to try to get together after they finish.

Today was our 58th wedding anniversary as well as Father's Day. I went to the diner and ate Sunday dinner, which was a thick smoked pork chop, veggies, a dinner roll, and angel food cake with strawberries. It's not home cooking, but it isn't bad. Years ago we used to host a dinner for our parents at the best steak house in town, and it was a nice party. Our parents always hosted Christmas and other holidays, so this was our way of having a turn. My parents were married on June 13, we were married on June 15, and my in-laws were married about June 17, so we picked a Saturday in the middle of June, drove to Springfield, and went to the Shady Inn, so named for the giant oak tree in the front. Five of the six celebrants at that table are gone now, and so is the Shady Inn, but it was a good time when it happened.

We're not getting a lot of rain. It's humid with occasional showers and has been for days. The main storm appears to be in Oklahoma, Minnesota, and points between. Sorry you're getting flooded, Lorita.

I put out the trash and changed the water in the birdbath just around sunset. The birds love the fresh water, and the roses love the brown water. Sometimes I call it "flushing the bird toilet." The birds can't help it. They perch on the edge of the birdbath to take off, then leap into the air with their strong thighs, and the effort of the leap causes them to jettison cargo - right into the water behind them.

It's nearly ten, I'll say good night. Sleep well, porchies.

Lorita, the caterpillar was near our laundry room. When I went back I didn't see it. Where it was there was a milkweed bush. Milkweed is toxic to animals and people.

    Good morning,

2:30 am is the result of yesterday's nap that lasted a little too long, lol.

Lorita, YES!!! to egg in the mashed potatoes to make potato cakes, otherwise they will not hold together to fry. We had diced hash browns with our burgers yesterday, along with skillet pork-n beans/bacon/onion and fresh cantaloupe. So good!

We have the first of summer squash from the garden. And radishes galore. DH has been pickling jars of radishes. I'm looking forward to bread and butter pickles. The chickens LOVE the radish tops.

Coffee is ready and laundry is calling. TTYL

    Good morning porchies.

I hope the resident dads had a peaceful day.

Lorita— I have made shredded hash browns in the waffle maker. Mine is non-stick, but I still brush it with a little avocado oil for flavor and crispness. It's nice because, as you say, you don't have to attend to them. I also make leftover dressing in the waffle maker for hot turkey sandwiches. So good. Mom always made her mashed potato pancakes with an egg as binder.

Jerilynn— a Father's Day nap sounds wonderful. LOL, DH managed to get 2 in yesterday. How is the revamping of your DH's diet coming along. I'm due for a blood draw next month and am dreading my cholesterol numbers. Normally, they've been fine but last year I was right on the borderline. I did dial back the cheese plates in lieu of dinner and red meat to occasional treat status but the last couple weeks I've been indulging.

Beth— Those rocks remind me of the ones near where DH and I stayed last week. They're in the Dogtown section of Gloucester along a hike. The Babson Boulders have pithy common sense carved into native granite. "Keep out of debt", "If work stops values decay" and my favorite—

    image.png

Eagle and Lady Z— I am sorry the relationship with your sons is not what you deserve. That is so sad.

Iris— That's a great shot of the caterpillar. So close and focused. I hope things are claming down in your part of the world. BTW, my friend lives in Long Beach. Her husband is a naturalized citizen, and she feels very strongly about the subject.

Carl— We're anniversary twins who land on Father's Day, too. It must be a bittersweet day for you.

I like your attitude of letting go of parts of your childhood that you would have had done differently. I have done this with my dad. The man had some mental health issues (his cousin recently shared with me that his step-grandfather used to take him to tent revivals in search of a "cure" which is weirdly funny but sad at the same time) and was raised by a woman unfit for the job. He did his best.

    _____________________________________________________________________________________________

We had a quiet day yesterday. DS had to work, so we celebrated Saturday evening with dinner here. I even invited my mom as she has some serious FOMO. DS questioned the wisdom of inviting her as DS thinks "she makes him crazy". (I'm thinking "you do, too, kid but there's a seat at the table for you" but I didn't say it) DH did get a $100 amazon card from mom which was very kind of her. (FTR, I got $60 for Mother's Day from her which is way more than I deserve)

I did sous vide filets (and burger for DS who hates steak) and overcooked jacket potatoes with broccoli and store-bought Key Lime Pie that was really lime meringue. The steaks were unusually good and there's enough broccoli for soup tonight. I lucked out with the wine which was dirt cheap and exceptionally good. I need to get back to the store and pick up a couple bottles to share with friends next time we get together.

DH and I did go out to my favorite bar for a casual dinner last night to celebrate the actual anniversary. LOL, DH actually forgot what day it was and thought the anniversary wishes from my niece were for Father's Day. What a bone head. I got a mashed potato pizza so I don't really care.

The cable contractors put in my new line this morning. It was supposed to go to the far side of the house where the other utilities come in but the contractor sent it to the original box. I don't really care but the Comcast installer might. I need to reach out to him later.

    Wishing all a pleasant day.

HB , mashed potato pizza? Can't imagine what it's like. Thanks, guys for the Info about egg in the potato cakes. Used to.love those and boiled potatoes in the jackets. We had those a lot when I was growing up. I can still see,in my mind, daddy going to the kitchen to put bacon grease in his. I love the picture of that rock!

I went out this morning, in my.boots, of course, to close corral gates. Girls were on the other side of the pond drifting this way so wanted to close the gates before they got here. Got the two front ones closed okay. Walked around to the back gate and couldn't get the gate through the mud. When they opened it, they opened it in toward the barn. So, walked back around to the outside and finally closed it. I want to give that new baby time to get stronger. Can just imagine him getting stuck in the mud and me trying to get him out and getting stuck myself. They won't like being outside though but there are shades to get in.

I woke up during the night with my chest and neck hurting. Rubbed with Theragesic knock off and went back to sleep. I guess I was sleeping on my side and it triggered the costochondritis- scary.

HB, I make shredded hashbrowns , too, and am going to try them in the waffle maker and that other thing. Thanks.

JeriLynn, when we had gardens I can remember the first radishes, green onions and new potatoes - always so good. Daddy and I always dug the potatoes on my.birthdsy, then put them in the cellar. We had potatoes and onions all winter.

    Time for breakfast. Back later.
