Red eyed gravy: two ingredients; dripping from country ham and black coffee. Some people thicken it up with flour.

Ron good to see your post. I knew some Southerner would know about that red eyed gravy., Like I said, I never ate it but remember my.parents making it.

Did you ever eat poke? I have the best crop of it this year but it's big and rtthatall. When we used to pick and eat it, we used it when it was small. We had a bed of prickly pears that we sprayed and got rid of most of it and the poke bas taken over. Bryon's cousin broke it back but if has come out and is tall again. Charles had a friend who lived in town but would come out and fish with him- he dug up poke roots to p!ant at his house in town so he would have it there.

    Hope you're feeling better, Ron.

So I have to ask everyone - what is the difference between chocolate gravy and chocolate syrup (that you'd put on ice cream)? Is chocolate syrup sweeter?

I've had key lime pie once and loved it - in spite of the pie texture!

My phone tells me it's 74 outside, but it doesn't feel that warm, and there is only barely some sun. But, the weather is pretty variable here until right after the 4th of July. Then we'll get about two months of reliable sun.

I just finished my DJ set - Beach Boys and Sly and the Family Stone. My s.o. didn't know a single Sly and the Family Stone song - how is this possible? At first I thought maybe it was an age thing - he's almost six years younger than me, but now I think it's an east coast-west coast thing (I'm from CA, he's from NJ). Sly and the Family Stone was a west coast band - huge in San Francisco, not so much on the east coast where my s.o. is from. Still, so much good music by Sly and Co. I still love it.

GG, I would say that chocolate syrup is sweeter and thinner where . Chocolate gravy is lighter in color,a bit, and a little thicker and creamier, like gravy. I couldn't eat a spoonful of the syrup but could the chocolate gravy. What do you all think who have eaten chocolate gravy?

Watching two hours of a good PBS show ,"Walking with Dinosaurs. Really interesting. I think I will go to.bed and finish this show, then MSNBC and news and weather. There are very severe T- storms in Wichita and coming into Osage County in northern Okla. Hopefully they won't get this far south.

Good night for now. Sleep tight.

Lorita, people out here eat prickly pear! They call it nopales. If it grows back, you could harvest it and set up a roadside stand and make some money! 😁 Just kidding!

Ron, red eyed gravy sounds good. What do you put it on?

GG, key lime pie is delicious. My mouth is watering.

Cookiemom, eaglemom has a Zoom meeting for caregivers that she is in charge of. That's what I know.

    Good morning.

Red Eye gravy is usually poured over the country ham to enhance the flavor. It is also used for dipping your biscuit in or poured over potatoes.

Pulmonary appointment this morning and VA is working on setting up a appointment with GI.

Told my Missouri son yesterday that I hoped to make a Missouri trip for the 4th of July. I have a VA appointment July 1st and not another till July 14th. Family was happy I'm going, but concerned about me making the drive alone. I told them not to worry, I would make frequent stops. Besides, it will give me a chance to look over some cabins. Ive been looking on line, but its not the same as actually looking at one in person.

    Good morning

red eyed gravy is one of my good childhood memories. It was back in the day when some family members had smoke house and they slaughtered their own pork and made their own hams. Don’t guess I’ll ever have that again. I have no idea how to get it. I think in the south, from things I see on some YouTube channels, it must still be available there. I’ve tried ordering a few times online, but it’s not the same. We liked to boil potatoes with their skins on, we called them potatoes in their jackets. Then we would peel the skin off, mash it up and put the red eye gravy over it. I also liked it over my cornbread. My family did not thicken it. Yes I have eaten poke greens and I do like them. You do have to use them when they’re young.

JeriLynne your flowers are beautiful. My garden area is looking pretty good. And I think the front yard will be OK. The garden where I planted sunflowers zinnias and marigolds, I’m not sure how it’s going to turn out. The things came up fairly well, but things like to get into the bed at night and just isn’t growing or looking too good. We have not had very good weather and now it’s going to get really hot. So we’ll see what happens. My not in it anymore.

Thank you Mint; I'm enjoying the flowers and the birds. It is peaceful.

My grandparents had a smokehouse and we had our own pork. And chickens, and dairy cattle with milking done twice a day. We had redeye gravy, not thickened. Mostly milk and sausage gravy.

Good morning! I'm eating oatmeal with raisins, walnuts, almonds, and cinnamon, with a cup of black coffee. I make the oatmeal with hot milk instead of water. It's not biscuits and gravy, but it it's not bad.

We got a little rain last night. The ground is damp, the air is cool, and this is the perfect morning to dig up the thistle that has sprouted in my backyard flower bed. TTYL

    Good morning all…………..

Cookiesmom54 to answer your question we have a daily Zoom program we attend. Its for the participants, thinking that would give caregivers an hour to accomplish task alone. But what's happened is caregivers enjoy the interaction as much as our loved ones. Yes, I do lead it occasionally. If anyone is interested shoot me a DM and I'll further share with you. Since its Zoom, you can be anywhere and participate.

I'm going to go water the plants before the sun becomes unbearable. Let's be safe everyone.

Good morning to those on the porch already.

All this talk of gravy. Yikes. I've heard of chocolate gravy but had no idea what it was exactly. I assumed the cocoa was added for color and depth of flavor much as the coffee in red-eye. I had no idea it was sweet. The things I learn here.

Jerilynn— The bee balm is gorgeous. Is it really as blue as it appears on my screen? I tried bee balm when I first moved here. DS's nursery school held a wonderful plant sale fund raiser, and I was assured that 3 plants would spread to the point of invasiveness. That didn't happen. They petered out within 3 summers. Ditto the coreopsis as well. I'm thinking of pulling all my perennials and replacing them with peonies as the deer seem disinterested. I have one doe who's been snacking in my backyard nightly despite my chasing her.

Ron— How long is the drive ahead of you? DH and I were planning to visit his brother which is allegedly a 10 hour drive we've never made in under 13. He's dreading it after the 9-hour drive we made home from Rockport. I'm dreading it because of in-laws. I remember when we used to power through a 15-hour drive to Indianapolis like it was nothing. Not any more.

Carl— That oatmeal sounds wonderful. I like a bowl of oatmeal that's been tarted up to the point it's almost dessert. I should add that into my breakfast rotation more often.

Gothic G— I'm surprised your DH didn't know any Sly and the Family Stones lyrics. I'm a mere 8 miles from NJ and recall them on the radio quite a bit in the 70s and early 80s along with The Philly Sound and disco artists that were popular after the peak Motown era.

Mint— My annuals are a mixed bag so far. The zinnias and vinca are thriving, the cosmos are going insane, but the mixed pots look kind of mangy. I'd love to try some sunflowers in my recently cleared out bed along the garage. Do you think it's too late?

    _________________________________________________________

It's still dreary and humid here with T-storms forecasted for dinnertime. Same again tomorrow. Friday looks lovely and then it's the first heat wave of the summer. I'm supposed to meet my bestie to celebrate her birthday next week. She's immuno-deficient and that means dinner/lunch outdoors. Not looking forward to 97F in the shade. Yuck.

My niece bought a last-minute ticket to visit a friend in FL this weekend and discovered that he passport is expired, and the new one hasn't arrived yet. This means she needs to get a same-day Real ID. The line looks about 200 yds long based on the picture she sent me. It does not look like fun. At all.

I need to figure out dinner for my people. I'm thinking maybe pizza before it gets too hot to use the oven.

I hope all have a pleasant day.

    Red Eye gravey;

Country Ham and Red Eye Gravy | Our State

The name “red eye gravy” comes from the appearance of the gravy once it has been placed in a serving bowl. While the dark coffee and meat bits sink to the bottom, a layer of grease is usually visible on top – the result, giving the appearance of a human eye.

Morning, just got up. I woke up at 7:15 but laid there and watched TV. We had storms during the night and more rain but it's sunny now. Going to heat up and be humid. Dread that. Need to get to mailbox to mail Jerry's birthday card. He will be 95'Monday.

JeriLynne, that beebalm is pretty. We used to have it in the meadow and I transplanted some in of to the yard. It did really well for a few years but is gone now and doubt there is any in the meadow. We used to have lots of wildflowers but gone now. You know I haven't even seen any honeysuckle blooming. It used to be all along our driveway and the yard. Smelled so good.

Went to the mailbox but too lste. She had already delivered the mail. Her PU tracks were the only ones on the road and water was over it in a few places.

I emptied the rain gauge and it was just below five inches for this week. Girls are in the shades. They stood around wanting in the barn but toooo muddy for the babies. .maybe by Friday or Saturday I can let them in.

We used to have a smoke.house when I was growing up. We may have taken it down in 2000 when we enlarged the yard. Daddy used to cure the hams in a big box with sugar cure or salt, not sure which.

Ann Burrell passed away yesterday, only 55. Always enjoyed watching her.

You all talk about deer eating your plants. Are the plants outside your yard fence? I looked for honeysuckle on the way to the mailbox and didn't see a single one. Grasshoppers are growing and.hopping everywhere. Even saw some poke with holes in the leaves, so they're eating. Our meadow had been covered with tickle grass but the wind has blown most of it off. Looks better.

Busy day at home. Walked the dog a couple of miles early, before the heat. I have a 12 y.o. black miniature Schnauzer named Josey Did an exercise video and then did my exercises that I try to do every other day. Working on a new one, an Asian or Goblet squat. Not easy. Mowed the lawn. Got a new wreath for the front door - it's sunflowers. So pretty! Will go watch Jeopardy soon - any other Jeopardy fans (addicts)? Then, weather permitting, Farmer's Market tonight.

    Hello All.

Lorita. I have never had chocolate gravy, and I never heard of it till you all started talking about it. I like chocolate, but gravy does not sound good to me.

Ron. How far of a drive will that be for you? Maybe someone in your family can fly down and drive back with you. I would love to take a long drive and stop along the way and take my time doing that. But I would be afraid to do that by myself. I used to love to drive, but not much anymore.

Beth. I used to be a big Jeopardy, fan but not much since Pat Sajak, retired. Is there a new host? Are is it just reruns?

If you all remember, I started my fitting for dentures 10 months ago. The lower part of my jaw was reconstructed so post could be placed. Then it took awhile for healing. Then I had to deal with a second placement, because the post were not healing correctly. Three months ago I got my uppers and finally adjusted to those. Today I went in and had the lowers put on the post. So far I'm doing good, but it's only been 5 hours. This has been a long drawen out experience, I'm glad it's overwith, but I would not do it again. It seems like Ron, had the same thing done, but to more extent. I guess I will recover 😌

It's 112° here right now, going up to 115°. I'm not bragging I'm whining about it. I think I will take a nap. Hugs to all, Zetta

Big Jeopardy fan. I can sometimes answer the questions but it takes longer. Zetta, the host.is Ken Jennings. He wss a BIG winner years ago. The long time host before him wss Alex Trebeck. Pat Sajak was on Wheel of Fortune. I still miss him but there are reruns on the weekend with him. I don't think shows are ever as good when they change hosts.

Hope you continue to do well with your dentures. It has been a long haul for you.

About the chocolate gravy. Mixed with.butter and over biscuits you would never think "gravy". I'm going to find my recipe and post it so you can try it.

I used to enjoy travel when Charles was here but no more. I do not enjoy going to town or anywhere much anymore. Good thing I I love where I live, isn't it?

Beth, good for you walking. I need to start walking the GPs to gain back my strength but sounds like it's going to be uber hot and humid from now until October. Your new door wreath sounds ptetty. I love sunflowers. I have a dream catcher on my door.

Zetta, are you close to Eloy, Arizona? I think I have mentioned this, but one of my uncles worked in there and he loved it. His wife went out to visit on her vacation and she said it was too hot to even go outside or open your eyes when out there. Guess the only good thing is you don't humidity but hot is hot anyway. What does. Molly think about the heat? I know the GPs would not like it at all.

Carl, your oatmeal sounds good. I used to eat it a lot. Have you ever tried overnight oats? I did but didn't care for it. Must take getting used to it.

    Back later.

My cherry pie is (was) super good! I was gifted 14 cups of cherries from friends at church. I made a pie with 5 cups, froze 4 cups and gave 5 cups to my neighbor. He said they are "Stella" cherries. They are tart cherries, not bing cherries. Bing cherries (sweet cherries) are fantastic but I think people mainly eat them raw, not cooked or in pie. GG would know better than I; they grow in her area.

It's raining hard right now. I love the sound of rain. We have had a little rain every day since Sunday; now totaling 1.2." I am appreciating it but sorry for those of you who are getting too much!

We are on water restrictions: no lawn watering. We have plenty of water but the quality is affected by nitrates (from farm chemicals). We have a facility that removes the nitrates but they cannot keep up during this time of year when the demand for water is high.

Lorita. I just looked it up, we are 49 miles from Eloy, Arizona. It's not the way we come and go when we leave Maricopa, so I've never been been by it. Yes I do remember Ken Jennings. And I do remember he is now the host. I was getting mixed up with the wheel of fortune. I liked both those shows. And Molly, does not like the heat. The best time for me to let her out is morning before the sun comes out. Then just before bed. Hugs

Beth, we have had close to 30" of rain this year. Our annual rainfall for the entire year is 44". It is so wet but now the rains are ending and humidity will take over. I just hope we don't have another drought. I love cherry pie, especially ala mode or with whipped cream. So nice o f you to share with your neighbor.

Zetta, Sheena and Stormy can't handle heat either. They have thick, double coats so winter is better for them,-- and me, too.

Iris, do they eat the whole paddle? What about the thorns? They're tiny and jump on you if you get close. I have had them in my hands and it is painful. When we went to the Grand Canyon the little shops along the highway had candy made from cactus not sure what kind. Even had handkerchiefs made from cactus. I have read that if there are cacti on ranches out west they burn the thorns off of them so the cattle can eat them.

Last night, especially in northern Okla. Had lots of severe weather. Many huge trees broken and uprooted and falling on houses. There were st least three tornadoes in eastern Okla. And at least three in Western Okla. Weatherman just said there is a possibility of some thunderstorms in this area early in the morning.

Bryon called and plans on coming tomorrow afternoon to mow. He's off work tomorrow. It will be so hot for them but he works outside all the time. I'll have cold Gatorade for them and he always brings a cooler of cold water and drinks.

Just had a good cry- they were talking about the starving babies and people in Africa, all because they discontinued USAID with warehouses of food rotting while people starve. I just cannot understand people like that. Sorry, or maybe not, just had to write that.

With that, I will say good night. Sleep tight.

Lorita - you made my heart sing when I read that you watched Walking With Dinosaurs. It's on my list of things to watch. In college I was on the paleontology track - dinosaurs were always my thing, and I could always picture myself sitting on the ground somewhere looking for fossils. But my passion for civil rights/civil liberties got the better of me and I ended up in law. I'm sure my non-leathery skin is thanking me right about now. 😄 Thankfully my guy will accompany me to natural history museums and let me go on and on about the dinosaur fossils we encounter.

And yeah, that was my guess about chocolate syrup and chocolate gravy. Still, chocolate gravy sounds delicious. I'd love to see a recipe - I'd make it in a heartbeat.

JeriLynn - I love your flowers! Those chairs look so welcoming.

HB - I have no idea how my s.o. doesn't know any Sly and the Family Stone — not even Everyday People! That song was even used in at least one TV commercial.

On Real IDs and passports - I opted not to get a Real ID, I just use my passport. I had to renew it a few months ago and I did it online. I was absolutely stunned when my new passport showed up in nine days after I filled out the online forms!

Beth - I always liked Jeopardy - even if I'm horrible at "sports" and "history". We always watch it when we're visiting my mom-in-law. She also likes Wheel of Fortune (it comes on right before Jeopardy) so we watch that with her too.

Tell me more about the Goblet Squat! I was also at the gym today. Today we did "sticks", aka Eskrima/Kali. I don't know why I like it so much, but I do.

I don't know a lot about cherry pies since I don't really eat pie. It's a texture thing - the insides are not quite a liquid and not quite a solid, just an uncomfortable in-between. But I think you're right, most people, including me, eat Bing cherries raw, not cooked. Funny, I've never thought of cherries being cooked, even though that is exactly what happens when you make pie.

Zetta — Hoping that your mouth heals quickly! Do you like the end results?

Today is Juneteenth, the celebration of the end of human slavery in the United States. One step closer to becoming the Land of the Free. I'll be sure to put up a flag, and maybe eat a slice of pie to celebrate.

Carl, I was unfamiliar with Juneteenth until I came to California. It's good to celebrate the end of slavery, even though the 13th Amendment made it official.

I eat my oatmeal the same way, with raisins, walnuts and almonds, and cinnamon. Lately I have been eating steel-cut oatmeal.

Lorita, I don't remember how my neighbor ate his nopales. I'm sure he didn't eat the thorns.

The weather was hot today, but only up to 84.

I stopped watching television several years ago.

    Good morning.

Zetta, the drive to Missouri is around 6 1/2 hours, but will probably take me 8 with frequent stops. Sounds as if your oral surgery is taking as long as mine did. Once its all over you'll love being able to lock them in without having to use all that glue.

Photographer us coming today to take pictures and hopefully be on the market by next week.
