Carl, I had never heard of fritters but my college dining room served apple fritters and corn fritters, and I loved them!
HB, I have not heard of that task, to "tack" the neckline, since I was in school home economics class.
My cardiologist evaluated me for cardiac amyloidosis a few years ago. He didn't tell me how serious it was but of course I looked it up. Fortunately I don't have it. I sincerely hope your mom doesn't have this terrible disease!
Many years ago when I started to enter my car I noticed some children standing around. One child very softly said that his friend was beneath my car. I didn't quite hear him so I asked him to repeat. At that moment a boy of about eight crawled out from under my car. He had been looking for a ball. If I had gotten into my car and started the engine, what a tragedy!!! Now I try to remember to walk around the car before getting in in order to make sure there is nothing going on.

good morning
Iris, your pictures are beautiful. thank you for sharing them. Don't think I’d want to live among all that though.

Good morning to those on the porch.
Beth— I hope you're having a nice visit; those meals rival the sort of repasts prepared by Jerilynn and sound great. LOL, when we went to Rockport getting a blueberry muffin was the only thing on DH's to-do list.
Mom's hand surgeon said that repetitive motion is a risk factor for carpal tunnel, he feels her anatomy (petite and significant arthritis) and sleeping with her wrists bent play a larger role in her symptoms. Hence the nighttime splints we fight about. I'm salty about those as they involved several appointments including 2 different ones for the splint fittings as her insurance will only pay for one each day.
Lorita— Fingers crossed the fridge shows up sooner rather than later. Your story about the snake reminds me of the time DH got up real early and saw one of the cat's toys on the floor and thought "wow, that's really realistic— it looks like a real mouse". When the cat walked in, he went to toss it to him and discovered it was, in fact, a real mouse.
Iris— Those tents are very glamorous. Wow!
The hot air balloons remind me of a story about two of DH's work colleagues. These two were a couple for years before parting ways when he was transferred to Europe. Let's call him John Doe and her Jane. They tried to be discrete, but it was an open secret and the subject of much gossip. A few years after the breakup Jane went on a bucket list trip to Africa and did the hot air balloon ride. When she landed wearing a tee shirt with the company's distinctive logo on it, the man helping her out of the basket recognized it and said "Do you know John Doe?" I mean, what are the odds.
Thanks for the good wishes regarding mom. Dr. Google tells me life expectancy after a diagnosis could be 2-7 years; at 87 with multiple medical issues, I don't know how a diagnosis would impact her unless her quality of life went south quickly.

I think I will rope DS into a Costco run today. The weather is much improved and I'm running out of various staples that are mostly too heavy to lift right now.
Have a great rest of your day.

I think anything that compresses the nerve in a carpal tunnel can cause carpal tunnel syndrome. My wife acquired CTS via a blood clot that lodged in a carpal tunnel.
Another hot day today. 70s now, 80 by 9:00, high in the 90s. I can't complain. It's far better than the heat wave in the mid-Atlantic States and the snowstorms in Australia. Actually, it's a normal summer day in SW Missouri.

Morning, already 85 with heat index of 97. Going to be another hot one. The barn swallow is on her nest. I know she gets hot but maybe leaves the nest a while to cool off. As hot as if is I doubt the eggs would cool off much.
D has four big wheels at his entryway and started painting them but ran out of paint. I may order things that don't need refrigeration so hope he will let me order more for him so he won't need to go back to town. We have two big ones at our main gate and two more at the next gate and I imagine they need fresh paint, too. . What was left of my loaf of French bread molded so guess I need to make a loaf today.
HB, sorry about your mothers possible diagnosis. I hope it all turns out okay.
Iris, those pictures are awesome. I just can't imagine seeing all those beautiful animals and it hurts to hear how they're decreasing in numbers. Your sleeping arrangements look comfortable, even the loo. Did the balloon ride scare you? Some years ago we were in Albuquerque at the Balloon Fiesta and saw the mass ascension one morning. The balloons are huge and so pretty. They said the people in the balloons could hear everything on the ground. Looks scary to me.but just imagine what you can see from.one.
Hope everyone is well today. Better get that bread going. It takes about three and a half hours. Back.later.

Iris…what a trip. The pics are so interesting.
Finished 1st Ansel Adams tour. It was wonderful. Everyone had something to share.

Here in SoCal we are having June gloom again. A marine layer of moisture rises up from the ocean and obscures the sun, making the morning cool, even chilly. But by around 11 am to noon, the warmth from the sun evaporates the marine layer and the weather becomes warm. The day may become hot but when the sun goes down, the temperature becomes cool again.
Lorita, when I was up in the balloon, I didn't hear any sound except the whoosh of the gas flame when the pilot opened the flue.
There are many programs and rules to protect the wild animals. It's amazing, some of the animals are only about five miles or so from a town. But they don't go into the town.
My brother attended the balloon fiesta in Albuquerque but he didn't go up because he has a fear of heights. I don't have that fear.

Good afternoon Porch Rockers.
Iris. Thank you for all the pictures, there amazing, looks like you were real close to the animals. Sounds like you ate some of that crocodile, it did not look very apatizing to me. Your very brave. The tents are very nice. Those baby elephants are so cute, look like they drink a lot of milk.
Lorita. I hope there is nothing serious wrong with your car. It's nice your getting a new fridge. Seems like you just got that fridge.
I have had many different types of coffee pots, I love coffee. Iv had the fancy latte makers, but I finally went back to the old glass drip pots. The next will be a percolator, if I can find one that starts and finishes before I get up in the mornings.
I'm still dealing with hip problems. The doctor should have my hip x-ray back today. He gave me some pain pills to take if needed, so far i have not needed to. Were going to yoga tonight, hopefully the stretching will be good. Doctor said don't stop yoga.
It's hard to keep up with all of you, your all so busy. Hugs Zetta
1 -
Zetta, we have had that refrigetstor 25 yesrs. We bought it when we moved down to the farmhouse in 2000. It's been a good one except for the icemaker. What's wrong with your hip, Zetta? Do you really enjoy yoga and is it helping your balamce?
Got a call from the dealer to bring the car in next Tuesday at 8:30. She said they had talked with the mechanic who said it wouldn't take too long to fix it. When I was there Tuesday they thought it would take most of the day. I surely don't want to be stuck there too long.
Beth, it looks like you may be getting some rain today. There are storms or rain west of us now but not sure they'll get this far east.
Carl, where in Missouri are those B2 bombers located? They look IIke something out of science fiction.
I have stayed inside all day except when I fed the birds the last of their feed for this summer this morning. I worry about Darwin being outside in this heat. He doesn't know when to stop once he gets started. I can identify with that so I try to not get started.
Need to think about something for supper, maybe potato wedges or French fries in the NuWave oven along with cottage cheese. Never got those microwave muffins made. Maybe tomorrow.

Lorita…25 year old frig? Get a new one. Don't you have a HomeDepot or Lowes near you that would deliver and install?

Judith, about 30 miles away. Sears is going to replace it . We've had a policy with Sears for years where if they can't repair an covered appliance, they replace it. It was approved for replacement in January but they never notified me. Now it has to.be reapproved. They replaced an air conditioner a couple of years ago. Is it raining over there?
Darwin just told me he inhaled too much paint fumes yesterday when he was painting his wheels. Said it made him dizzy. He needs a medical guardian.

they insure it forever????? …….wow1
1 -
Yes. Every appliance is covered except the air conditioners, I think, and the microwave. If it was built in, it would be. Not sure about the hot water heater. They charge $100 to come out and repair but if they come back for the same thing within 180 days,no charge.
I was just outside and looked at the caladiums. They are gorgeous. They' re not too tall yet but some of the leaves are huge. They are light green edges with white centers and dark red veins. The others are dark, dark red. Some.of the red veined leaves are about 12" long and at least 8" wide. I have three big planters of them, mixed. I wouldn't have needed as many as I got. Did you get yours planted and are they up?

The B2 bombers are based at Whiteman AFB in central Missouri, near Warrensburg. I saw them from a distance when my son's Boy Scout troop toured the base back in about 1990. They do look like flying saucers. There's no tail, just the specially shaped wings and paint that makes them reflect radar waves in all directions instead of back to the sending unit. A radar operator can't tell them from a small object like a bird.
Most military bases are named for generals, but Whiteman was a 22-year-old second lieutenant. He was one of the few fighter pilots to get his plane off the ground at Pearl Harbor, and, outnumbered about 100 to one, one of the first American soldiers to die in WW II.
1 -
Thanks Carl. They are futuristic looking planes. Hate to say this but never knew about that base and who it was named for.. He certainly deserved it.
I was watching Lawrence O'Donnell and the guest said over 350_000 people, babies and adults have died from preventable disease and hunger since USAID was dismantled while medicine and food and plumpy nut was being stored in locked warehouses. The plumpy.nut is made from.peanuts and is a paste that when given to babies can keep them from starving. I think it said it costs less than a dollar a day. Just makes me heartsick.
Time for bed. Will say Good Night for now.

Good morning,
UP again at 2 am. I can't seem to get my sleep schedule sorted.
Weather here is unbearably hot and humid. Heat index ranges from the 90s to 105. Woke to thunderstorms yesterday with absolutely WICKED lightning. By mid-morning the storms were over, returning late in the evening but with less lightning. Storms predicted later today but not as severe as yesterday. Still hot. Still under heat advisory.
DH has been much more compliant with coming inside before getting too hot since he had a heat episode in the barn last year. Lorita, your description of Darwin reminds me of DH. I have to constantly stay on him - he still thinks he's a 20-year-old man. He's not.
With the storms beginning before daylight, my whole day was off yesterday. The brother in Scottsboro had called Tuesday evening to say his lawnmower belt had broken. He's had a stroke so cannot repair it himself. His son is in his 30s and is just (I'm sorry but it's true) a bum. He doesn't work, lives at home, sits on the couch playing video games. SO, we had to load up a lawnmower DH intended to sell, haul it to Scottsboro and bring the broken mower home. DH will attempt to repair and return it. I keep asking myself if the Lord has called us to be caretakers of grown folks who make poor decisions and are completely happy with their situation. I think not but if that is indeed the case, I need Him to send some more tolerance and understanding my way. I get really frustrated with folks that "could" do, won't. OK, enough of that. I'm done whining.
Iris, your pictures are awesome! Looks like you had a wonderful trip.
HB, I hope your Mama's testing turns out ok. As usual, you have parsed the possible outcomes and come to a logical assessment.
Beth, I'm coming over to visit and eat at your house, lol!
Ron, it seems the move is coming along without complications. It must be a relief to have the house sell so quickly. I'm excited for you and can't wait to see what kind of cabin you choose.
Carl, fritters. Corn fritters are my favorite.
Zetta, I bought my granddaughter one of those fancy espresso thingies. She loves to make different "fru-fru" coffees.
Mint, our tomatoes are not doing squat. I think too much rain, then too hot. They're small, start to split and just won't grow to full size. DH bought two more plants to try a different variety. I don't know what to do.
DH has appointments in Tullahoma today so we'll be gone all morning. A grandson is coming to work on his boat that is stored here, kids will come along to swim. I just leave a key on the patio so everyone can come/go when we are not here. They all know where the snacks and drinks are. And they mostly clean up after themselves.
Off I go to clean bathrooms before DH gets up. Have a good day everyone.

good morning
yes JeriLynn high heat and lots of water are not friendly to tomatoes. That is very hard on them. The plants I bought at the greenhouse are looking good so far and two of them have small tomatoes. my seeds did not come up well at all. They’re only a couple of inches high now but they should take off and I’m gonna try to give a little tomato food here in a few days. I would buy all my plants, but I like a tomato really well that’s called black Seaman. It is a determinant tomato doesn’t get real tall. I have never seen plants for them. The other seeds were for varieties I had not tried before. I did get one plant from a variety called . So that will be a new one for me this year if it grows and I get tomatoes.
hope everyone has a peaceful day

Morning up waiting for grocery delivery. Will have to.order things that need refrigeration later.
It's already oppressive feeling outside, very little wind. Girls are around the pond. The little swallow is on her nest. JetiLynn, do you ever take a nap during the day? Doubt it but maybe bedtime is early.
Mint, we used to grow our tomato plants, too. We had a screened in porch that faced east so was a good p!ace for them. Good luck with your tomatoes. Our favorite wss one called Delicious and they were huge. Never have heard of Black Seaman. Better stop and check in delivery back later. Morning, Ron.

Good morning. It's sort of gray today. I'm hoping to meet a friend for her birthday lunch and I hope we don't get rained on. I was so sleepy when I came downstairs that I put double the number of bags in my tea pot. I anticipate a buzzy day.
Judith— I'm glad the tour went well. Are the visitors enjoying it as much as you thought they would?
My mom's current house came with a 1-year home warranty that sounds a bit like the one the sellers provided. It wasn't a Sears policy, so Lorita's is likely better/different. The house was about 23 and had almost all original appliances and mechanicals. She used it for the leaky refrigerator and a switch on the DW. Sometimes she waited days for a service tech to come and the fridge guy had to come out a second time because the first one botched the repair. When it came time to renew it, the cost was ridiculous. You could probably break even if you saved the premium and paid out of pocket to repair/replace. For her it made more sense to replace with newer energy efficient models as needed.
Lorita— I hope your fridge situation is sorted out soon. This is crazy.
Carl— That must've been a great outing with the scouts. It's amazing how much more open the bases were years ago.
Jerilynn— The nephew sounds like a real gem. Does he at least use the lawnmower? Is he one of the people you're cooking for when you bring meals to Scottsboro? That would chap my butt.
I still haven't seen the blood tests specific to amyloid back yet. Normally tests hit her e-chart pretty quickly.
Mint— The last couple years the tomato farmers around here have really struggled with cold and rainy springs that gaze way to blistering summers. What tomatoes I have been able to buy haven't been as good and have splits that limit their uses. Sadly, an especially wet spring that required replanting did in my favorite farmer; he grew a hybrid created for Campbell's which was used in their tomato soup when it was manufactured in NJ. They were stellar.

I need to pay a couple bills, start my pizza dough and get a shower, so I'll leave you all with a wish for a nice rest of the day.

I need a keeper! Any volunteers? My groceries were delivered and got all of them inside except a 24 pack of Pepsi, big box of Moist 'n'Meaty and 32 can case of catfood. Instead of using the dolly to take those three heavy things through the house to the utility room, I carried each one. Now my back hurts, took an acetaminophen and am leaning against the heating pad. I don't think I will ever learn. You would think an old lady would know better - but until I do some silly thing like this, I don't feel so old and unable to lift things like I used to.
I thought I would open the barn shutters and let the girls in there. I can't reach the wires to keep the shutters with out a step stool so went to the carport to look for it. No where to be found! I had it out there to help me get into the PU so where is it? No one had been here to pick it up so?
Charles used to have a sweet, little aunt in Arkansas and she was sure someone was coming in her window at night and taking one of her glasses each night. We could not change her mind so Charles locked the window and put a new lock on her door. Did not change her mind. Maybe I'm getting there, too.
HB,the refrigerator thing is crazy. No idea why it would take five working days to get it reapproved. But, what can you do? It's hard to find a repairman in this area. He would have to drive 30 miles so that would be a big cost for the service call. We have had this policy with Sears for probably 25 years. It is a bit changed now but good to have.
We used to make deep dish pizza and it was so good, especially the next day for our lunch. Now I buy those party cheese pizzas - not round but rectangular shape and not too big. I always add more cheese, maybe some onions and oregano. That sounds good for lunch. I bet yours are delicious. Home made is always best.
Sorry, I have been so long-winded this morning.

When I was a boy, we bought tomato plants from a man who grew them for the University of Missouri agricultural research department. We'd buy a variety of early tomatoes, big tomatoes, low acid yellow tomatoes for my grandfather, etc. Some years were better than others, but we always had tomatoes to eat and to can, maybe because the different varieties fruited at different times.
My car got a new vacuum hose, radiator, and radiator hoses this week. Things are breaking pretty frequently, and I think I'll buy a newer car this summer.
It's 80 and humid today, with thunderstorms heading our way. We expect heavy rain in places, no rain in other places, but thankfully no severe storms.
One of my neighbors is entertaining at the Senior Center today, from 11:00 through lunch. He plays recording of instrumentals of old standards and sings with them and does it really well. I'm off, TTYL

JL…understood…I am t,helping with the care of an ex son-in-law
Tomatoes???I wait until everyone has too may tomatoes and is looking for people to take them…lol
I think my group at the museum had a good time. Everyone seemed to have something to add and at the and one came up to me and said that she and her husband had been to many photography exhibits and even a lecture by Adams but that she had leaned more from our hour together. I was overjoyed. Feedback like that really means a lot.
Lorita….NO STEP STOOLS….NO LIFTING….
Speaking of airplanes etc reminds me. that Dick did not like to be on a passenger plane in the summer and if he had to he would be on the first plane out. He was never comfortable flying with someone else being in the cockpit.
I drive a 15 year old Volvo XC60. It goes in for maintenance @ every 8 months. They pick it up and deliver it back. The shop that works on it was started by men who worked for Volvo. We have been using them for at least 30 years. They always remind me to have someone run in on the highway for me (that would be the cowboy) and to be certain to use it every few days to keep the battery charged. I try.

Good morning 😄
Lorita. I hurt my hip 2 months ago, I got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, and instead of sitting on the toilet i fell on it and hurt my left side, butt and back. The pain comes and goes, so I decided I should go have it checked. The doctor was amazed at my flexibility, said nothing was broken, took xrays to make sure I had not chipped something. Gave me some strong pain pills. Told me to keep up the yoga, movement was good for me. I don't know if yoga is helping my balance but it sure keeps me stretched out. I enjoy the Relaxing yoga class, but not The Beginners Yoga, it's actually more movement. But I do both, because its good for me. ?????? 😏
Good advice from Judith, stay off of stools, ladders and no lifting. You need to be careful and take care of yourself, so you will be there to care for your fur babies.
JeriLynn. I also like the Fru Fru coffees, I'm just to lazy at times to make them. My daughter has coffee makers like that, so if I want one, she gets me one. That is sweet of you to leave your key out for the kids to come by when your gone, to use the pool and get some treats. Some day you will need to tell us where the key is. 😄
Going to be another hot day here, 107. I like living here with my daughter and SIL, but I miss the Oregon, weather.
Good day to all, Hugs Zetta

Happy Friday my porch friends. Hot, hot, and hotter here. I guess that means I can get my ironing caught up because its too hot to do anything!
Iris thanks for sharing your pictures. I've looked at them and was telling DH & he wanted to see them. Just now we both looked at them again. The hot air balloon pic is wonderful for showing the scenery.
DH had an appointment with the shoulder surgeon. I dislike that office, but like him. You wait an hour for a 7 minutes of his time. He did another injection and said we'll possibly do a third injection, we'll have to see. But surgery would really work. When I shook my head, he said there is another injection, insurance doesn't cover the cost, that we could try before surgery that helps many people. I said we'll discuss that option because I'm not doing anesthesia unless its absolutely necessary. I see DH take (or rather ask for) Tylenol every other day and a muscle relaxant when he has PT. To me that's not horrible pain. Its not stopping him from doing anything he wants. Yes his arm is weak, but we're working on strength. We'll see . Another appointment in 3 months.
I guess the ironing isn't going to iron itself. Let's be safe everyone.

Temp is 89 but heat index is 103. Be careful doing the yoga, Zetta. You know when you live alone you have to do what needs doing. I have always been able to do these things pretty easily but it is getting harder. I bet you do miss the cooler Oregon weather.
I have lived here all my life but I don't think anyone really gets used to the Oklahoma heat and humidity. I feel sorry for those who have to work outside. I feel sorry for the animals who have to be outside, too. My cats are asleep on the bed, Stormy is sleeping on the divan and Sheena has decided she likes to sleep in the bathroom where its dark and cool and the cats don't bother her.
There is a pretty good east breeze today and the girls are in the shade. I'll be glad when mid Sept. gets here,- long, hot summer is ahead. Zetta, I'm watching Wagon Train.

Lorita….( I hope others realize that we have been friends for 10 years here) When you are alone and old you must figure out new ways to do things i e order smaller amounts for frequently or figure out a new system for the shutters. I ordered the little giant jumbo step stool. It might be good for you too

Lorita . I was also watching Wagon Train, it's on at 11am and again at noon, right now its Gunsmoke. 🤠
