Feeling lost, dad has passed and am struggling to handle his estate

My dad passed a week ago. My mom preceded him in death. I have a copy of their will and I was his activated POA. The attorney that created the will is no longer living. What do I do next? Do I need to hire an attorney to instruct us how to process the will, file his taxes, etc.? Is there a checklist of all the things I need to do from a legal and financial standpoint? What are all the things that a power of attorney has to do when our loved one is deceased? Any help is very appreciated.

    So sorry for your loss.

The executor of the will takes over once the party is deceased. Check the will and see who is the executor. If it is you, contact an estate attorney.

A person's DPOA ends upon the person's death.

As the previous two posters said, a DPOA is invalid upon death and the executor of the will takes over. The executor of the will really needs to hire an estate attorney to help with the probate process. The attorney will walk you though the process, though in my experience you do need to keep up with/push attorney a little, as probate can be slow. Google "probate procedures" that should be enough info to get you started.
