Weighted blanket

Hi. My father has been restless at night and waking up. I tried a weighted blanket last night and it seems to help a little. He did wake up once but wasn't as agitated as he usually is. It seemed easier to get him back to bed. Does anyone find this helps? It's been a couple of months of disruptive sleeping. I am trying anything I can.

I hope you have success with finding something to help dad sleep. It can be a challenge for the elderly and those with dementia. Last month my mom trialed melatonin and ran down the street barefoot in her nightie after a vivid nightmare.

You might mention the use to his PCP. There are a lot of contraindications for weighted blankets. Ideally, these should be prescribed by an OT although generally most people are OK with about </= 10% of their body weight. People with heart or circulations issues, respiratory conditions (asthma, COPD and OSA), orthopedic (arthritis, joint issues) conditions, thermoregulatory issues, certain skin conditions, mobility/weakness and cognitive impairment (late-stage) are generally recommended to avoid the use of weighted blankets.

also ask his doctor about medication to help him sleep. Many who post here say their LO is on Seroquel which helps. Sleep disruptions are common in dementia.
