In the last week, my mom's dementia has quickly advanced, and she's having many issues overnight. My dad wants to keep her at home but needs help. Do you have any advice for how to find overnight care, what to look for, etc? We're looking for care in Lake Norman area of NC near Charlotte.

One good place to start for information about resources is your Area Agency on Aging. The list of agencies in North Carolina is here:

You can try the big agencies like Home Instead and Visiting Angels; they usually have a good pool of trained people but are more expensive due to overhead and 50% of cost typically goes to the agency / 50% to the employee. You can try care.com for matching available independent workers but have to do your own checks for background and qualifications. Overnight (only) is a challenge to have someone who is basically a babysitter, unsupervised with nothing to do most of the time while others sleep.

im so sorry and welcome to “here” - a place no one wants to find themselves but where there are a lot of people with good firsthand knowledge.

Along with the department of aging, you may want to check with you local Alzheimer’s association chapter, or call the 24 hour hotline. They have skilled social workers answering the phones who can help you find resources. It was very helpful when my mom’s advanced quickly.

If you can find an in person or zoom family support group these can also be helpful- people may know through word of mouth which agencies are good etc.

let us know how it goes. Hang in there.
