Sleep too much?

My mother’s sleep patterns have changed over the month. She previously would sleep 9-10 and nap once during the day. Now, she goes to bed as early as 5pm and sleeps until 11am AND naps from about 1-4pm. It can change day by day, but she is just constantly sleeping. She’ll eat breakfast but that’s the only meal. No medication changes have happened during this time. Is this too much sleep? Should I encourage her to try and stay awake more during the day? I feel like she’s not really even “living” at this point…

This is both a common part of disease progression and a really tough thing to navigate. I am facing a similar situation with a parent in memory care. In December I asked a related question and got some thoughtful responses. They might help you too. You are not alone.

If it is a sudden change and you have not done so already, I would recommend getting her checked to see if there is an illness, infection or other issue causing the change (UTI, pneumonia, etc.). If there were any recent medication issues, that could also cause a change. Once these types of causes have been ruled out, you would know it is most likely progression.

I am going thru something similar. My mother sleep 18 to 20 hours a day. Her record is 50 hours (that is not a typo). We are looking at hospice now. Because she sleeps so much, she keeps losing weight - 10 lbs since Oct. It is SO HARD to see this. Doctors say it is part of the disease.
