Home Health Aides

Does anyone have any experience with introducing a home health aide to your household? My wife could use some companionship and appropriate mental stimulation, and maybe someone to supervise her showering and brushing her teeth.

Welden, my DH is in MC but when he was home I had a wonderful aid who came and sat with him. They played cards or did puzzles and she would often bring him a little treat. We also had an aide who came twice a week to help with showering. Both of these were from the Area Agency on Aging. I called them early on and they provided respite help so I could leave the house for a while. If you Google your state's department of health and senior services, I think you can find them. Or you could just look up Area Agency on Aging. I hope this helps.

I introduced our aid gradually. The first visit I stayed with them in our home the entire time. The next visit I left for only a brief time. As I began to sense DW was comfortable with the companion, I left them alone for longer periods of time.

I would tell her the help is for you to do light housekeeping. The first time the aide came I stayed home with them. I went into the bedroom and let them get to know each other. The second time she came I left for a few minutes. The next week my DH asked if “his lady” was coming. I could then leave for 4 hours each week.
