Dad passed away

My dad died on Friday. He had memory issues that went unnoticed or swept under the rug for several years. He had knee replacement surgery in January. I stayed with him for a week and then my brother stayed the next week. It became quite apparent that he wasn’t safe to be by himself so he came to stay with me “until his PT was finished”. His dementia got so much worse after his knee surgery. Honestly the knee replacement was the easy part. He ended up falling and hit his head really hard and just never bounced back. We put him on hospice care and kept him at home, safe and loved. Honestly, there are worse things than dying. He doesn’t have to go anywhere he doesn’t want to be and died with dignity. I will never regret the time I spent caring for my dad, but it was not easy.

I’m writing this post to thank you all for your support, guidance and selfless sharing of feelings and information. I honestly felt not so alone when I would read these posts. Dementia is horrible and so not the group I ever wanted to be a part of. All of you caring for a loved one with this disease have my utmost respect and sympathy. May tomorrow be a good day.

Thank you. This forum has been amazing. I’m so so sad but so happy my ball bustin, phD, research driven dad isn’t struggling to use his phone, write a check or remember what he did this morning. This is such a cruel disease.
