Vascular dementia medication

I don't think there's any meds specific to vascular dementia. My DH was on Namenda, but that didn't seem to help after a while. He is also on blood thinners for his vascular problems. I second the idea of checking with a geriatric psychiatrist. Most of them are available by telehealth.

My mom has vascular dementia. We were told by the neurologist there is no medication for vascular dementia. Since vascular dementia is caused by strokes or mini strokes I was told to do heart heathy things. Keep blood pressure under control, exercise, low cholesterol diet, keep diabetes well managed. There are medications she takes to help with the depression and , anxiety that comes with dementia, blood pressure medication and of course diabetes medication, but nothing for the dementia specifically.

My wife was recently diagnosed with Vascular dementia. My biggest frustration is that I do not know how to help her when she tells me that she is not feeling well. She tried donpezil (Aricept) & Memantine for cognitive improvement but could not stand side effects, namely weakness, fatigue & excessive sleepiness. Right now she is only taking Lexapro prescribed by her psychiatrist & Pravastatin prescribed by cardiologist & Metformin for diabetes. It is a day at a time. Some days are better than others.
