ER visit
Mom has yet to agree to see a neurologist to get a confirmed dimentia diagnosis. Her primary doctor has written a letter that she has cognitive decline and unable to make medical decisions. We are hoping now the POA and healthcare authorization we have will help us since the Dr wrote the letter. This week mom is having severe hallucinations all of a sudden. They are involving people coming to the house and threatening to kill her and my dad. Cops have been called a few times this week and On Saturday we took her to ER so they could check her out. We wanted them to keep her and do a full phych evaluation but they wouldn’t. Has anyone had this issue? Somehow we are going to have to physically drag her to the neurologist but she has refused to take medication that her primary Dr has prescribed so we don’t see that will help us much.

Was she checked for a UTI or other infection? Sometimes sudden overt symptoms can be caused by that.

yes we thought of that. It came back clear.

Does your mom live on her own or with someone? Maybe see if you can get your mom to see a geriatric psychiatrist. In my experience they were the only one to help manage my mom's symptoms - her neurologist and PCP would not. My mom now sees her psychiatrist every week in MC and thinks of her as her new PCP.
We've encountered the same from the ER twice in the past couple months. Each time they've kept my mom for 2 days and was evaluated by the geriatric psychiatrist. Last time she was in crisis she was so agitated she pushed the doctor at her MC and it took 2 firemen, 2 EMT's and one of the PT people to get her on the gurney to bring her to the ER. It was very traumatic to witness. Everyone thought for sure she would be admitted, she was not. She was given a sedative and was on her best behavior the rest of the time so they released her. They claimed she was "stable" because she was eating the meals and was able to get up to use the restroom. They did the preliminary test for a UTI and it came back "elevated" so they chalked it off as PROBABLY a UTI. The 72 hour culture came back it was NOT a UTI. It's very frustrating.
Now my mom is refusing the seroquel that was introduced in the ER despite everyone's effort.
I feel your pain and frustration. It makes helping our LO feel like an uphill battle.

she currently lives with my dad. He is doing the best he can but she fights and argues with him about everything. And now with these hallucinations I don’t know how much more he can take. We are working on getting her to a neurologist now and will go from there. I’m sorry your mom is refusing the meds now 😢

fib to her. Tell her her insurance requires the doctor visit. Don’t tell her what it’s for. Ask her doctor if her meds can be crushed. If not ask for meds that can be. Put them in applesauce or pudding. Make an appointment with a Geriatric Psychiatrist.
