The thumbnail grew back, after turning black and falling off. You have to strike a black walnut shell pretty firmly, or you're just smoothing out the little ridges on the shell.

The Hammond company in Stockton MO buys walnuts in several locations during the month of October, and people bring them in by the truckload. You'll see signs advertising the sale sites around mid-September.

Hammond employees run the nuts through a huller, weigh them, and pay by the pound. They have a factory in Stockton where machines crack the nuts and women sit all day with nut picks digging the meat from the shells. You can also buy tools for picking up the nuts without bending. The tools work kind of like the old non-electric sweepers, a rolling wire cage picks up the nuts as it rolls. I picked up nuts to sell when I was a boy. A lot of people just want them out of their yard and are glad for someone to pick them up. It was another income source at the end of lawn mowing season.

I learned about the walnut shell polishing medium from friends who reload fired rifle and pistol cartridges. Instead of cleaning the used brass with steel wool, they toss it into a tumbler with a polishing medium, such as crushed walnut hulls or crushed corncobs. The tumbler turns slowly for hours, and the brass looks like new.

Carl, your expertise on nuts brings truth to the phrase; your never to old to learn. You expanded my nut knowledge when i had always thought; you couldn't teach this old dog new tricks.

My grandfather had a dining room table and chairs, plus some other items, made from black walnut wood from his trees. Simply beautiful!

Ron, it's just local knowledge. You would know this too if you had grown up here. Or if you were as nuts as I am.

An old dog don't learn new tricks, an old dog don't fetch no sticks, an old dog don't run no trails, an old dog don't point no quails, but he can still bury a bone.

Black walnut is beautiful. It is a slow-growing, dense, figured wood and is highly prized for furniture, gunstocks, and the like. A black walnut tree is worth a lot of money, just for the wood.

    Hello everyone!

I haven't been able to post because we've been on the go all day, and then my phone ran out of charge. I can only charge back at the hotel where I can use my adapter overnight.

HB, that olive oil can might have had Italian on the opposite side. Many signs and labels are printed in at least four languages: Italian. French, German and English. I've also seen Spanish, Russian and Chinese signs. I believe Italy is the second most visited country, so there are a LOT of tourists from all over the world.

    1000006675.jpg

Are these the shoes you like to wear? I saw them in a window.

Yesterday we visited Florence it was fascinating. I'll have to report more when I get a chance. I have to get to bed now, we leave early tomorrow morning for another location.

    Good night.

I’m tired of protein drinks, soft scrambled eggs, pudding and jello. With only liquids last week and adding the scrambled eggs recently, I was ready to put something in my mouth with taste.

    IMG_0419.jpeg

yes, it took awhile to eat but I have the time and sure enjoyed it. Wish I could have toasted the bread!

Iris, I will be looking forward to your next group of pictures.

Picking out walnut meats is one job I would not want!! All You wrote Carl, about.black walnuts is really interesting. Ours mostly do not fill out so I don't pick them up and they're really hard to walk on. Our tree is old and if it blew down it would crush the SW corner of the house and/or the storage building.

Stormy and.I just fed Billy, filled.his water tank and went to the mailbox -highlight of our day. Received my caladium bulbs! Took them out of the packages and put them on a rattan tray. The bulbs are really nice and big. Probably won't plant them until early May.

Sandy I checked our three.Heavenly Bamboos and all of them plus a couple of the sptouts.have leaves on them. I think I will try to transplant the sprouts on the north side of the house, when it's time. Also need to tansplant.wild violets.

I wrote all of this except the last three paragraphs but didn't get it posted. I saw my first snake of the season and killed my first snake of the season-hope it's the last. It was on the AC where Rusty was yesterday. We have rock on the house up to the bottom of the windows so guess he crawled up to the AC and was trying to go higher. At least it was outside instead of in the house like the others a few year's ago

Carl, I had a friend who had a black walnut tree in his pasture and someone tied to.buy it. We have little ones that come up around ours- guess I should transplant a few.

Ron why don't you try cottage cheese or yogurt? Both are delicious and have lots of protein. Also you might try cream of wheat or Malt-o-meal. Easy to eat and swallow and are good for you - also bananas.

    Good night, sleep tight.

@harshedbuzz …..Over the time I had it, I had to replace 2 windshields and a side window in that old Cherokee. Ice off a semi on the turnpike destroyed the windshield which was terrifying and a tech at the tire store had a tire iron slip out of his hand than through my passenger window. I think the car was cursed.

I recently had a dealership shatter the rear window in my VW Beetle. They were replacing the hydrologic cylinder that keeps the back hatch open and the tech (used to be a mechanic in the good ole days) let the window crash down on a tool he was using and the window shattered. Sounds like we had the same tech. 😅

All safe here! We had several tornados in Iowa last night; I haven't heard damage reports. Not sure if there was much damage. I guess they assess that when it's daylight. There were tornado warnings across much of the state so we were down in the basement watching the tv for a couple of hours. We received 0.7" of rain.

Hello! The weather here in Italy is perfect—clear blue skies, 70's temp, and no smog.

Two days ago we had a walking tour of Florence, learning about its history from an small village to the cradle of the Renaissance. In the beginning we were treated to a fashion show of fine Florentine leather and a 18K gold jewelry show.

    1000006651.jpg

    Church of St Michael.

    1000006670.jpg

Ponte Vecchio—The Old Bridge—originally this was a place of slaughterhouse and leather tanneries—later, the Medicis, the ruling family, made the bridge into an area of goldsmithing and jewelry making.

    1000006677.jpg

    Republic Square

    1000006685.jpg

The third largest church in the world--I can't remember the names of all the historic churches we saw.

We visited the Accademia Gallery, where we were entranced by the marble statue of David, carrying his slingshot and a rock, contemplating his plan of attack. I took several photos of David au natural, so I feel reluctant to post.

David was sculpted by Michelangelo and took three years to complete.

    1000006701.jpg

One of the ladies wanted a shot glass from the Hard Rock Café, so we searched for it and found the shot glass.

    1000006704.jpg

We had dinner at a fine dining restaurant next to our hotel.

    1000006705.jpg

    Table setting

    1000006706.jpg

My antipasto—shrimp with strawberries—I had ordered beef stew for my second course, but had to settle for a seafood platter. Otherwise I would not have ordered a seafood appetizer.

    1000006707.jpg

    Grilled fish, prawns and squid

The fish was good. The prawns as you can see are burned and have the feet and shells on. I would have expected a fine dining establishment to shell the shrimp. The squid tasted like glue. Maybe that's how it's supposed to taste.

    1000006709.jpg

    Octopus—did not taste like chicken.

    1000006708.jpg

White Beans--I paid 50 euro for this dinner.

I have been surprised about the level of the food on this trip. Some has been great, some not so great, in my humble opinion.

This trip has been adventurous. So far, two ladies missed their flights for two days, one lady got off the boat at the wrong stop, two travelers got left behind because they didn't get back to the bus on time, one lady fell on the stairs and dislocated her shoulder and fractured her arm, another lady twisted her ankle, and another lady got sick on the bus. But we're all together now, and the misadventures are behind us.

Yesterday we had several excursions. First, we visited the American Cemetery in Italy where our World War II soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice are buried.

    1000006733.jpg 1000006735.jpg 1000006738.jpg 1000006716.jpg 1000006750.jpg 1000006722.jpg

    The Tuscan countryside

    1000006753.jpg

Then we drove to San Geminiano, a walled city, famous for its church.

    1000006756.jpg 1000006759.jpg

Street with bell tower in background

    1000006760.jpg

A chocolate fountain—most of these shops are now tourist shops, selling treats and other souvenirs. Mostly tourists are here, although a few hundred people do live here.

    1000006766.jpg

This area is the home of Chianti wine.

    1000006764.jpg

This is the Museum of Torture. The little that I saw at the entrance was gruesome. Apparently these methods were used during the Inquisition.

    1000006765.jpg

Wild boar is one of their sandwiches.

    1000006773.jpg

Making the sandwich—I did not try this.

    The whole animal

We visited Siena, which is the home of the oldest continually operating bank in the world. Siena became wealthy in regards to trade between Rome and Florence. The neighborhoods warred between each other. Finally it was decided on 17 neighborhoods, or tribes. Every family must belong to a neighborhood or tribe, which is symbolized by an animal. Once a year, all the babies born in that tribe are baptized into their tribe and given a certificate to last their entire lives.

    1000006793.jpg

Every neighborhood is marked by its animal. Notice the snail above the door.

    Another snail

    1000006808.jpg

    The church at Siena

    1000006816.jpg

The 17 different tribes of Siena no longer war or compete against each other, except twice a year when they compete in a bareback horse race. The prize is not monetary but the prestige for your tribe. This is the square around which the horses run.

    1000006822.jpg

Dinner was at a winery—grandfather and grandson

    1000006841.jpg

Antipasto—the red in the middle is like a tomato pudding; the brown are beans.

    1000006842.jpg

    Chickpea soup

    1000006843.jpg

    Pasta course

    1000006844.jpg

    Meat course, with potato wedges

    1000006846.jpg

    Dessert—apple cake with biscotti

    1000006849.jpg

A liqueur to dip the biscotti in—this was a delicious and satisfying meal!

    Good afternoon

i am ok Lorita, thank you for checking.

I don't think i will raise any tomatoes this year. Not going to do a lot of flowers either. Gardening is taking a back seat. Have other activities that I enjoy now so gardening is being shoved side some for them. My body prefers it that way. Can’t do and don't have desire to do all that work anymore.

Heard there was a lot of bad tornadoes in Oklahoma last night. Think I heard Enid mentioned.

    Good afternoon.

I'm glad everyone in OK is fine from the tornado's. Scary for sure.

Keep the pictures coming Iris, I love taking your trip with you. Squid should not taste like glue.

Carl I didn't know all of that about black Walnuts. I do know that anyone who turns wood loves working with it because its so beautiful.

It seems like right now all I do is transport DH to appointments. I'm not complaining, I just hate that that seem to get all bunched up. Next Monday & Tuesday have appointments also. Wednesday we have something brand new we're doing. Quite sometime ago the Sid Richardson Museum had a flyer that they were possibly going to offer a special program for those with dementia. Of course I immediately signed DH (and myself) up. I had an email this morning they are having the program for 8 participants and their caregivers next Wed & DH & I are part of the pilot program. I'm really excited, we'll have a Remington discussion, do a painting then a catered lunch. I can't share with DH now because he'll be too excited to wait for Wed.

I'm off to run an errand or two and get the car washed. Apparently my car was target practice for several birds yesterday. Nope, I'm not having that on my car!

    Let's be safe everyone.

Glad you are okay, Mint. I'm to the point where I don't care to do much either. I would like to.but the old body says "no". Guess it doesn't matter.

Yes, Enid was stuck hard with lots of damages including Vance Air Force Base, also a couple more touchdowns north of there. There are chances for severe storms today and both weekend days. Saturday afternoon and Sunday look pretty bad. There is a cap that will be in place Sunday that will help prevent severe storms, if it holds. We had rain during the.night but storms lessened as they came farther south and into Arkansas.

Carl and Ron did you all have storms? Better watch those.buzzards, Ron. I hate to see them flying around.

Rusty left his calling card last night on the porch railing near where I leave his peanuts and sunflower seeds- two halves of a.black walnut. He has never done that before. Guess he wanted to show me what he's doing.

Iris, those Church and Bank buildings are beautiful. Sorry but I'm not a fan of.their food, however.the pasta does look good. Guess it's what a person is used to. Looks like there are lots of people around - are they from your group? You are so generous to us taking and captioning all those pictures so we can also enjoy your trip. How much longer will you be in Italy?

It's really cloudy and dark here now - looks like it might rain. Back later.

Glad you survived the storm, Beth. Lorita, I hope you're OK. The thunder kept me awake from two to six last night, but no severe storms here.

I'm eating tortellini with Italian sausage and green beans while I look at Iris' photos of Italy. It's one of my mail order meals, but it isn't bad. Iris, I've never eaten wild pig, but I've heard it's delicious. You may have missed a treat.

You're OK to go outside, Ron. Just don't lie down 😉

Iris, the churches and other buildings are stunning! What a glorious trip you are on!

Judith, I don't have any photos of the black walnut pieces my grandfather had made. The dining room table seated 8 but the table legs were in such positions that some persons were straddling them when we ate. Since we do often have dinner for 8 (kids and grands), we eventually retired that table (donated) and bought another.

It's a beautiful day here after the storms. I still haven't heard damage reports; maybe they'll talk about it on the 4 o'clock news.

Time to mow. The grass has greened up nicely.

Lorita, my group has 50 travelers, mostly from California. The other people you see in the pictures are other Americans, some British and Germans, and many Italians, because they love to travel around their lovely country.

Carl, it's nice that Factor sends you international meals. Italian food is growing on me.

The Thunder. Everyone in Nichols Hills has a sign or a flag or some basketballs in their yards!!!

Got an IPhone 17. It is a big upgrade for me.

The snake was probably just gettig some sun to get its' body warmed up. I have removed snakes but never killed one. They are an important part of our echo system.

Stew for lunch with a slice of sourdough and good Irish butter. Popsicyle for dessert.

Then heading out to the mailing store…2 returns and 2 gifts. It is a nice store within my 1 mile radius and there is always a dog!

They have reported the Enid tornado was an EF-4 tornado. Another one just.hit Kiowa, South of McAlister about 75 miles south of us. It formed over Von Kaster, storm chaser, with at least 70 mph winds.
