Looking for a device that my mother can where so I can track her whereabouts? She doesn't always take her phone with her when she goes out. So I thought if she could have a device on that she doesn't remove so I can track here on my phone. She doesn't wander at the moment but I rather be prepared in case she does

I think even with a necklace or bracelet, you are going to have the same problem as the phone. She may take it off or just not wear it. It might work if you can find a way to attach an air tag to her shoes, as long as she always wears the same shoes. It’s good you are being proactive.

many have used air tags placed in shoes. Your local Sheriff Dept will give you a free tracking device, I think it’s a watch, but I don’t think you can track on your phone. It’s for them to track if they wander. You should put locks on all exit doors. Put them up high. Most dementia patients don’t look up. Is your Mom still driving? Does she live alone?

Thanks for the info. I have an Android and she has a basic phone because she is not tech-savvy. I currently wear a necklace that I don't take off so I thought that could work for her.

She does not drive. Let me be clear, she is still self-sufficient and has a routine. I am just trying to be proactive because my mother-in-law began to wander. Her dementia was much worse than my mother's. She lives alone in a 55+ building, and people do check in on her. Air tags require an I-phone and I have an Android. Air tags would not work because she does not wear or carry the same item everyday.

I bought an air tag to know my father's location when he's driving and it turns out that you air tag needs access to the internet to work! I have the air tag in his car but since there is no internet, I still don't know where he goes when he goes out! (He doesn't have a cell phone - he says that they are too heavy.)

I know there is a watch specifically made for this purpose. I just can't find my notes where I wrote the name down. I'll call my friend who has them, and loves them, and let you know.

At first I used an apple air tag, but that works through an iPhone. She shared it with me, but if she was out somewhere without being near anyone with a iphone it would not log her location. Now I have replaced her wifi only iwatch with a cellular connected iwatch. Created family then shared her iwatch location with the family.

The watch / tracker my friend is using is called Tranquil. He said its expensive, but it brings so much peace of mind that out weighs the cost.

His wife was a huge wanderer, now less so, but that was the reason for the purchase. He can track he if she gets away from him. And he can talk into his watch and it comes out her watch - something she can handle.

And of course, all the tracker can tell you is where they are or were- not what they are doing [did they look both ways crossing the street, pay a bill correctly , not reveal more info then needed, lock the door when they left] or who they are with [getting scammed] . Asking them afterwards is probably useless.

It's a pure gamble that they will get 24/7 in person monitoring before something bad happens. It's difficult to decide to limit freedom of a parent but safety has to be first. They aren't capable of deciding the "when." But as a backup when out with a PWD that's terrific.

@buttonsboomer, it will only work when your mom is in the later stage, when she is moved from place A to place B, and stays put. What is the us3 then?

I called my city's police department regarding our "Project Lifesaver" program. The officer over the program asked me some questions about my mom. After answering them, he pointed out that she will not wear it, or after donning it, will remove it shortly thereafter. That is what his own mom did. Our mothers are sick enough to need it, but well enough to understand & state that they do not want a tracking device.

I spent $120 buying my mom a regular medical alert bracelet. She stated that she did not want anyone knowing she has Alzheimers. Though I tried to assure her that no one except EMS would be able to read what it says, she wanted no part of it. She removed it 5 times already. The 5th time she removed it, she lost it. It is now nowhere to be found.🥺

I have a tracking app on her phone which she usually has with her when leaving the house.
