After DH responded to a scam on Facebook and called the number that was there, I did some research and found there are ways to allow your LO to have a phone but lock it against all unwanted incoming and outgoing calls. DH has an OOMA phone (VOIP) and he can now only receive or make calls to the numbers that I put in his contact list. He does not know how to add to that or change it. I have been told that this is possible on the IPhone and on the phone that the ALZ society sells.

What a sad story. I'm guessing it happens more often than the few that make the news. A person who has early stages of dementia may not have the scope of their impairment totally apparent to loved ones at first but lack that edge required to evaluate a scam. And you are right, so many caregivers don't understand the magnitude of risk associated with leaving a PWD with a phone, computer, and access to money because they don't want to deal with taking it away or feel it's undignified.
