Night time sickness

My mom every night wants to call the ambulance because she feels nauseous and shaking. She has sundowners and gets fidgety and can't sleep. She also has congestive heart failure and her blood pressure gets really low. Not sure what to give her to help her relax and sleep. Doctor not much help, wants her to take Xanax. Which I'm not comfortable with. Any suggestions is so much appreciated.

I would try the Xanax. The stress + agitation she is having is more harmful than the med IMO. Also, I would have her assessed for hospice

At this point, it’s not worth it to worry about medication side effects. Anything that relieves their anxiety, confusion , agitation, pain, or sleeplessness is worth its weight in gold. Not only for her, but because it makes your life more bearable too.

I agree with calling hospice because of the blood pressure drop. Is she taking blood pressure medication? Maybe she doesn’t need it anymore. Hospice offers a lot of benefits including removing medication that’s not needed at this point in time.

welcome! I agree with the others that if she is not already on hospice, call an agency and request an evaluation. For my husband I give him 5mg of melatonin around 5pm to ease the sundowning and then he takes 100mg of Trazadone before bedtime . My husband also has low blood pressure so I try and reduce his fidgety wandering so he doesn’t get off balance.
