Neuropathic pain

My DH has severe bilateral knee pain that nothing is helping. His orthopedist thinks it may be referred from his back and ordered an epidural steroid injection. That gave him just a few hours of relief. I wondered if anyone has any insight into adding gabapentin (Neurontin) or duloxetine (Cymbalta) to see if that would help. He is currently on donepezil (Aricept) and memantine (Namenda). He has a follow-up appointment with his back doctor coming up and I am looking for suggestions from someone who may be dealing with this. Thank you!

Gabapentin is not a safe option for older people. It is associated with increasing cognitive impairment especially for those who already are impacted by MCI and dementia.

We were told by a neurologist to stay away from both of these drugs due to cognitive side effects. Look into red light therapy. No side effects.
