My DW and I are married 48 years today. Sadly, I know that it will pass with little recognition. Yesterday, when I mentioned it, she said it can’t be because she’s not that old. I sat here this morning with my coffee and read the poem posted by Groovy’s Girl. It made me cry today. Such a terrible disease.

My DW and I have an anniversary coming on the 13th. Last year was the first time she had no idea about our anniversary or that we were married. September was her birthday and also had no idea and so on and so on. It really hurt at the time but I finally realized that our relationship as husband and wife were over. I am now her caregiver and I will do my best to fulfill that duty. Yes when I read things like the recent poem and the sleep divorced comment I do get a little teared up but eventually come back to our norm of caregiver. This is the worst disease that I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. Hang in there we are with you all the way.

My wife (mid stage 7) forgot we were married very early in her progression. She hasn't recognized our anniversary for many years. This coming October will be our Golden, 50 years since our marriage. This time, her not knowing it, will be the hardest of all.

Happy Anniversary! Last year we celebrated our 45th. I spent much of the day with neighbors doing yard work. I cooked him a nice dinner and opened a bottle of wine. I out flowers on the table and used the good china. He had no idea what was going on but he enjoyed the food. This year he is will be in long term care for our 46th. I’ll bake something for him and bring it when I visit.

This year in Sept will be 50 years married for us. We met in 1973, got married in 1976, the bicentennial year, 200th year for America, which i thought was pretty cool. But DH hasn’t remembered any special days for us, or any family birthdays, much less our names and how we are related to him, for awhile. I just accept it, he was a wonderful intelligent funny guy with a heart of gold before this happened.

Happy Anniversary Snipe. So many special days pass by unnoticed with this awful disease. We understand your sadness.

Our anniversary was on May 31. Last year I was barely able to get DH out for a nice dinner. I lost him in January this year and our 39th anniversary just passed. I bought myself some flowers and toasted him with a glass of wine. It was bittersweet but I’m grateful for having so many good years with my soulmate.

Even though it’s not their fault, it still really stings. 😥 I was certain last night that my husband would forget the day. It really hurt & was behind the pity party post I made last night. After all that, he wished me a happy anniversary tomorrow. I know it won’t always be this way. It was certainly some anticipatory grieving on my part. I’m sorry you had to experience it this year. I hope you were able to find moments of joy on your special day. My heart goes out to you.

Reading Snipe's post hit me hard. I started wearing a sapphire ring my wife gave me decades ago, and now I hold onto its sapphire meaning of wisdom and loyalty through tough days. I find comfort in that small, durable reminder of our true bond, even when she doesn't remember the date.
