Who are we really?
We are partners, nurses, thinkers, rememberers, caretakers and captain of a ship we are trying desperately to keep from sinking. We think less of ourselves and more of who we care for. We are the lonely, the lost and often the forgotten. We are what none of us thought we would be. On the flip side of all that, we are strength, resilience, dreamers. We are proud, loving and special. We re the definition of resilience. We are sometimes lost and may fail miserably, but by god, we still wake up every morning and do our best. We are an amazing community of strangers that find answers to questions and strength when we are failing. Thank you to all of you who are my lifeline.

Well said. We are here among heroes of the highest order. Unsung, unseen, unheard, unknown but always on duty, 365/24/7. No days off, no holidays, no vacation, no full night sleep, no pay, no, no, no and the list is endless. What we do have is another day with our loved one, another hour, another minute to love them and that is priceless.

I have found that most people have a general understanding of what the person with dementia or Alzheimer’s is going through. Maybe not a full understanding but, something anyway. What doesn’t get thought about, or understood, is what we as the daily caregivers are going through. I know when I come here and read posts from others that they fully understand what we all are sadly experiencing each and every day.

I think we are the IMPOSSIBLES . We are doing an impossible job day in and day out, month after month, year after year. It is impossible, yet we do it.

Well said @trottingalong
None of us chose this impossible role yet all have risen to the occasion and do the best we can.

I love this: What we do have is another day with our loved one, another hour, another minute to love them and that is priceless.

So, so, true. Cherish every second regardless of their condition because you can talk to them, touch them, kiss them and look into their eyes. One day you will beg to be able to do that again.

Our kids are all on board with being helpful but, really, being a 24 hour a day caretaker for an adult LO, is something that only someone who has walked in those shoes can fully understand. For me, it isn't even the physical part (DH still does all his ADLS) but the burden of having to do all the thinking for 2 adults and having responsibility for everything is exhausting. I know that the physical part is coming (incontinance and such). I read everyone's stories and I know that, right now, I've got it easy. God bless all of you, all of us.

Well said. We do the best we can. We struggle, feel pain, seek to gain hope and we feel accomplished when we can meet our LO needs. This is a journey that needs encouragement and it is a positive that we are certainly not alone in our quest. This website is a testament to that reality. Thank you all for your input to help the rest of us endure the challenge of caregiving.
