Putting the beloved cat to sleep
Might have to put the cat to sleep. My WWD lives for that cat. I fear it will trigger a sharp decline in her condition.
Would it be better for her to be present or absent when he is put to sleep?

My DW is in stage 6 now and we have a black lab that she loves but IMHO I will not have her there when the time comes for him to cross the rainbow bridge.

I am so sorry you have to face this now. If she is too far advanced to process what is happening then I agree with @blacksparky that I would not have her present. Maybe you could up with some type of fiblet to explain his absence - he had to go into the cat hospital, etc.
Sending hugs for this heart wrenching time for you.

rplourde50- I’m so sorry about your cat and your DW! You don’t mention what stage your DW is in and this might make a difference. One of my wife’s nicknames over the years has been “dog girl”. She’s late stage 5. We’ve always shared our life with dogs, many dogs, and she was passionate about them. Recently we had to take our 15 year old terrier with long term health problems to the emergency vet (middle of the night/just the two of us there), me knowing it was time to let her go. I have always been the one to be with them at their time of passing as DW was always very clear she could NOT handle being present for the euthanasia. She sat with me for the vet exam and when it came time for the actual euthanasia i expected my wife to leave the room but she did not. At that time I let her know that this was the part she would not want to see and that she might wait in the next room. She said nothing but did get up and took herself into the waiting room. Had she argued or not understood well enough what I was saying I would have let her stay. She understood when I came out that it was over and we cried briefly together (normally there would be a way more prolonged grief sharing between us). The next morning it seemed business as usual for her. But not for me, I was deep into my grief for losing Lucy and so sad not to have my DW to share the grief with as we had always done.
I wish you the best with this difficult situation. Let us know how you manage this difficult time.

I'm so sorry you're faced with all of this.
Given your DW's stage of dementia, I don't think this will bring any comfort or closure. You might consider introducing a robotic cat. When my friend's mom was in the moderate stages, the family cats avoided her because of some erratic behavior when sundowning. Friend introduced a Joy for All cat she borrowed from the local library. They're not much to look at but they're quite compelling. Dad's MCF had a couple and TBH, my mom (no dementia) was captivated by the thing.

sounds like a great idea! I’ve given my wife a little plush furry stuffed doggie- she takes him everywhere and sleeps with him.

Karen711 that is a very sad story. It’s strange how the tide can turn. You were so caring and worried for your DW and yet in the end you were the one to carry the grief of losing your beloved pet and no one to share your sadness with, a double loss. I’m so sorry and I so understand.

Thanks Biggles! On top of being an amazing care partner to your DH, I know you’re a devoted doggie parent💕
