Sudden Aggression
I knew this day was probably coming. Let me preface this rant by explaining that my "support" consists of my sister who lives with both me and the pwd. We have never gotten along (probably never will) and she is on mood altering medication. My other sister, out of state, who has more problems then you can shake a stick at and my sister in law who was just diagnosed with cancer. Today, my mother started with wanting to go home. I calmed her but then the switch was flipped. I don't know what caused it but she became aggressive, angry, screaming and at one point tried to pull the phone off the wall (landline). My sister, with the mood altering medications, and her then began to scream at each other. Cursing was involved and I really thought my sister was going to hit her. I came close to calling 911 on the two of them. The screaming was reminiscent of said sister and my father screaming at each other when she was a child. I understand but do not condone elder abuse now. I also understand the use of alcohol and other substances. My mother thinks she is still in school and is waiting for her diploma in the mail. She is also convinced she has a scholarship to any high school. Syracuse was her school destination, even though we explained they were closed. I have a full tank of gas and Syracuse (400 miles away) seemed like an excellent idea. Let my "support" figure it out.
We gave her Xanax. Have no idea who we will be waking up to tomorrow. She woke up and was very concerned about falling. She held my hand until she fell asleep. When she does that, it's not the first time, it is the saddest thing.
Thanks for listening.

That sounds traumatic for you. I understand why it would take you back to what you witnessed as a child. If this kind of thing is repeated, could you talk to you mom's doctor about adjusting meds for her? If it's too triggering for your sister, could she take a walk, drive, whatever to avoid shouting back at mom or getting to the point of hitting her? You may be in some trouble too if physical harm occurs. Are you safe with mom and sister in the house?

Please check to see if your mom has an infection. Uti's are very common but could also be lung infection. Both may present without any symptoms, except for perhaps being totally out of it, combative, angry or other.

I think I'm safe. My sister may have meds she can/should be taking.
