Anyone know how care facilities do this?

Does anyone know how nursing care homes, care facilities,etc handle a patient who refuses to take their meds? What methods do they use? Thank you.

Yes. If it's a new or uncommon behavior, they'll try again later. If a patient always refuses, they'll crush the meds and put them in food. Make sure to check with your pharmacist to see that the meds can be crushed. If not, sometimes there is another form available or they may need to change to another medication.

I've seen it happen in my DH's nursing home. As @sandwichone123 said, they try a bit and then come back later. They don't make it a struggle. They also mix the meds in applesauce.

From what I understand, memantine is a very common medication for moderate/advanced ALZ patients and the pill cannot be crushed. Does anyone have experience administering memantine to ALZ patients who cannot swallow pills?

From drugs.com: Memantine hydrochloride extended-release capsules should be swallowed whole or may be opened and the contents sprinkled on applesauce and then swallowed.

In moms nursing home they have a pill crusher right on the medicine cart. I have seen them crush the pill and put in a couple of tables spoons of pudding and present it as a snack or treat. I think this method is probably used after several refusals and probably a care plan meeting. Her Al facility said they can’t force her to take medication. End of subject.

Anyone know how care facilities do this?
