long distance

Hi, I live in Hawaii, but my brother Dan was recently diagnosed with dementia in San Diego. My family there is being lacking with details, and I am having a really tough time processing this from a distance. I would love to join a virtual local support group here in Hawaii or anywhere just to listen, connect with others, and get some emotional support. Am I in the right place? Mahalo

I’m not in Hawaii but I think this long distance caregiving group has some situations that we call all relate to.

If you can swing it, live is so much better than virtual. Best case is you can get a hug or two following you sharing your unfortunate news.

Your local community should have some support groups—often sponsored by ALZ. Go. Tell your story. Maybe cry a bit or get that hug. You will soon learn what your family is up against.

You can search for in-person and virtual support groups by zip code here:

    https://www.alz.org/event-search

These are sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association. There are also groups organized in local religious organizations, care facilities, hospitals, etc.

I find that this online forum provides a lot of support for me; people are generous with their thoughts and experiences. So you are always welcome here! The long-distance board gets less traffic than others; you might try posting on the general caregiver board.

So sorry about your brother’s diagnosis. This disease is hard on everyone.

FYI, there is plenty of support you can provide even at a distance. I am my dad’s primary caregiver, and over the past few years, his brother has been a source of care and support for me and my dad, although he is a long way away and unable to travel because of his own health issues.
