Loss of sense of smell?

The other day our dog had a “conversation” with a skunk. Naturally, he reeked. And my DH, Stage 4, could not smell it. All of a sudden I realized he had lost his sense of smell. Has anyone else had this experience? I have not seen it mentioned anywhere, except as a symptom of Parkinson’s disease. DH does have some Parkinsonism, but is not being treated for that (it mostly affects his walking and balance).

Yes, some scientific studies have shown links between loss of a sense of smell and dementia. A couple of reports are linked below:

I haven’t noticed this in my PWD, but then again, we haven’t been presented with a skunky dog! I hope your dog is smelling fresher now.

My mil with Alzheimer’s had no sense of smell. I have also seen it listed in articles as an early symptom.

Thanks. And yes, the idiot dog, beloved of my DH, smells like a daisy thanks to the wonders of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and Dawn dish soap.

Same here - MIL taste and smell is way off.

We had a dog do that. Tomato juice… It worked, but I was trying to wash him, and he was licking his face. uughh… Quite a while ago - Not sure Dawn detergent was out, yet.
