Surprised
Just when I think I’ve got this I am hit with a “you’ve got to be kidding me moment”. My shock rears its head and I want to scream (I didn’t) “what were you thinking”? Today my DH used a serated knife to “clean the sticky stuff” off the dining room table. He took the finish off down to bare wood at least 5 inches across! There is no “fixing” this. This one was hard for me… still have the broken foot and ankle, still dealing with coffee grounds in the recycle, dirty dishes put away in the cabinet from the dishwasher and I never know what’s coming round the bend. I know you all understand.

You said the quiet part out loud. It's another way this miserable disease costs us both emotionally and financially. We spend a life together creating a lovely and comfortable home. What should be a sanctuary. A place that reflects who we are. And then the disease violates it all— stained upholstery, marred tabletops, broken tech devices, plush carpets replaced with vinyl and valuables "missing".

I’m so sorry you are going through this. Shouldn’t happen to anyone. My husband took a clock I had since college apart about 2 years ago when I wasn’t watching. He wasn’t even that far advanced with dementia at that point. Luckily a jeweler felt sorry for me and pretty much fixed it. I know these episodes are so distressing. Hope you can get some of the household problems resolved. Hang in there.

@jgreen I totally agree here but the only difference between our LO’s and children, Is children learn by example and our LO’s can no longer learn. 😩

Yes, we all understand. What was your DH thinking? He thought he was helping you. Find a pretty tablecloth. I hope you get some respite from unpleasant surprises, but with AD we never know what tomorrow brings. Sending healing prayers for your broken foot and ankle.

In defense of your husbands thinking, a serrated knife to scrape of something stickly is not far fetched. My husband in his better days would do that. I would have yelled, you were gracious.
Actually my husband messed up quite a few things and I was never gracious. Oh well, he was a top Navy pilot and aviation attorney. He just never got the knack of changing a light bulb.
If the table is wood is can. be fixed but maybe wait on doing that.

My wife has tried to cut the buttons off of her clothing, it only takes a second for something to happen, don't beat yourself up. I have installed many camera's inside my home with motion alerts to assist me they have been an amazing help.2

It's so destressing when these things happen. And scolding does no good since they were only trying to help. Several years ago, we had a beautiful antique coocko clock that we had inherited from my husband's parents. Unfortunately, it didn't work but I was hoping at some point to have it repaired. One day my husband decided to try and fix it. He took it off the wall and accidently dropped it. It broke into a dozen or more pieces. He was only trying to help.😐️

I know this isn’t on the same scale, but I now have a paper towel rack! He did this with 2 bunches of bananas too but he peeled them all first 😳

I understand your shock and dismay at what happened to your table. I am so sorry to hear about that. Our daughter made a sweet, cute little piggy out of clay when she was in art class in 3rd grade. We’ve had it for years and years (she’s 45 now). A few months ago I noticed it looked different, so I picked it up and saw that it had been varnished with a black tint to it. It brought me to tears and I patiently asked DH to please not do that sort of thing again. I sent a photo of it to my daughter and she sweetly told me not to worry, it just looks like it rolled in the mud. 🙂 At least she gave me a good perspective.

Over the weekend I went to put some frozen hamburger into the microwave to defrost it. When I opened the door the smell of rotting pork chops hit my nose. Apparently my DH had put them in there. I don't use the microwave very often but now I have to remember to check it everyday. Also, I have dealt with the dirty dishes being put up in the cabinet numerous times. I feel your pain.

I had to purchase a locking microwave. At Walmart not expensive -

I found my pork chops in the kitchen junk drawer. Kept getting a slight whiff walking through the kitchen. Took about four days to figure that one out. The surprises never stop. I like the stacked Bounty too. He did a good job. Hugs to you

Well this made me laugh! And that’s why I only buy two bananas at a time, never the big Costco haul anymore. Thanks for the laugh!

yes checking the microwave is a daily task here because he immediately forgets it and his brain does not register the beeping sound saying it’s done. I’ve also found old food left in the oven that gets burnt to a crisp when I preheat the oven and don’t check first.

While my husband went through a phase of “fixing” things, it was never anything important to me. He took my closet sliding door off to fix the roller… lost the pieces. Then he took the carb off of our generator…. Lost some of the parts. He also took the locking doorknob off the door to the patio, and yep, lost the parts. Every time I mentioned hiring someone to fix things he’d get mad at ME! Luckily he’s now at a point where I’ve been able to get things fixed.2 -
My friend's mother had Alzheimer's. One day years ago her mom couldn't find her girdle. My friend looked all over the house for the all-important girdle. She finally found it … in the oven! Thank goodness they didn't need to cook a turkey!
