Another sad day in this journey

Today I took my DW to the BMV to turn in her license and get a State ID. I went in thinking it was just another item on my checklist. I wasn't prepared for my reaction when I compared her bright eyes and warm smile on her old license to the blank stare on her new ID. It really highlighted what's happened in the last 3 years.

Yup! I experienced the same reaction when getting my DW's new ID. Blank stare photos recently continue to remind me of the loss of her vitality. It's hard.

Oof. I can only imagine that experience. I'm not looking forward to that.

If it's okay to ask, how did you decide it was time to turn in her license for an ID?

It's been 2 years since she's driven and it wasn't up for renewal until next year, so I was just going to ride it out. However, in researching online I discovered that the initial State ID had to be applied for in person (new photo, etc). Given the pace of her decline I wasn't sure she would be up for it next year. She struggled through the 20 minute wait yesterday (and that's about as short as it gets at the BMV).

I literally did this today with my dad. Wistful experience indeed, but it made me feel a little better seeing your post and the comments and knowing I’m not the only one.
