Saying she doesn't have it now

Hello! I am a full te caregiver to my husband grandparents, who i absolutely adore! She has Alz and he lost both legs the end of last year, beginning of this year. I started helping towards the end of last year. Gma was referred to a neuro to see if she's a candidate for for treatment that stops the progression of Alz. When first referred, she suddenly started telling everyone she no longer has Alz., then after a few days went back to her normal and knowing she has it. She and Grandpa live at their home and she's still able to do just about everything except drive. I live around the corner and they have health that comes. Anyway, we went back to neuro last week after have blood wk and imaging done. They did a cognitive test and suddenly she started telling everyone again she passed her test and they her she.does have Alz. She also started getting really upset and mad the last couple weeks as well as being paranoid. I had to go back I to neuro earlier this week, and they told her she did good on her.cognitive test but she.does have Alz. She still has to have a PET scan but then should be able to start treatment. I went with her the last 2 times too. Now Grandma is saying she did not go the other day but they called her and said she doesn't have anything wrong with her, then said her PCP called, saying neuro sent over all results and again, nothing is wrong with her. Sadly, they won't call her like that. I've worked in long term care homes for years and worked with different types of Dementia but caring for family is so different. She is suddenly getting so angry at me and especially my FIL, their son. He has POA too. I don't know what to do or how to help. She did know not to drive, but is now telling Grandpa and FIL she wants a new car. I feel like she's progressing quickly all of a sudden too. Neuro wants to add a new med but working at the.homes previously, im not comfortable with her taking it. Most of my poor residents had awful behaviors after getting on the medicine. The neuro said its a normal med they give. Sorry this is so long, I just don't know how to help her, I feel like im losing my mind, plus I have kids and a husband I also care for. Thanks for reading if you made it this far!!

hello and welcome - Could you let her try the new med? See how it works? As you said, each of our LO is different, and will or will not tolerate a new medicine well. Unless it is something really off-the-wall and untried, I would see how it works. Could always ween her off of it if it isn't working or has bad side effects. Unfortunately, it does sound like she would benefit from something to dial back that anger and agitation. Even for her own benefit, as it sounds like she is frustrated with 'this'.

For the car, you could tell her you might help her look at them next week when new models come in or better sale prices go into effect. whichever works. but always, next week…

I think it might be worth a try. You might also ask about a uti test. Given your description of her, are you able to bring meditation to her and make sure it’s taken. In my experience, once someone is diagnosed there is really very little time before living independently is no longer safe. You might want to start thinking about your plan B.

SSo, The doctors office yet again, didn't call in the rx, plus they're closed Friday. They wont even call her to see how she was doing. Said they don't do that. Also, she's telling everyone I've done and said all the horrible things to her and Friday night, she remembered where I lived and came pounding on my door, (walking to my house, leaving gpa alone) we live around the corner but still, demanding her and GPAs meds. I only take gpas meds, hers have always been in her room. Then told me I wasn't welcome back. Father in law talked to them yesterday and she said she knows she can't care for GPA without me (he's a recent double amputee) and said I could come over and she'd go to another room. Then later text me something about money or she's calling the cops. Father in law cares for their money. And again called demanding for meds. I told her she came and got them then she asked where they were, I said you walked home with them so I don't know. I know I could have handled better but I didn't know what to say or do. Shes telling everyone she's normal and doesn't have alz. But she did know she had it before all this. I did have her tested a week ago Friday and said it was normal but pcp said they'd send ut out. No word. I don't know how to help, especially if she sends me home tomorrow. Im still trying to figure out what I did to make her so angry. She asked me what the doctor said and I told her. That's the only thing I can think of. What can I do to help. Im the only caregiver..they have home health but they're only there a couple hours in the morning and a couple in the evening. Please help! I've worked in LTC and with dementia residents, along with a tone of training for different types of dementia. Family is so different than working with others. I feel so lost!
