She rejects caregivers

My wife needs assistance to get out of bed, showered, and dressed. She is suffering from mid stage O(or later) FTD and recovering from a broken femur. I hired an excellent service to send home healthcare workers to hep her in the morning and to assist in the afternoon to get her to the dining room in our retirement building, then to get her ready for bed. The morning nurse told me yesterday I may as well cancel the a.m. care because she wastes most of the time trying to convince my wife to get up, showered, and dressed. The p.m. routine has become a similar story. Convincing her to get ready for bed evolves into delays and outright refusal to cooperate. i know this is the dementia we are dealing with but the behavior makes all the caregiving efforts seem futile. I fear that if I place her in a nursing home she will completely waste away. My pre-dementia wife would not want any of this nor would she ever see herself behaving as she does.

I’m so sorry. I know it would be best for her to get up and get dressed, but I wonder if it’s time to let this go. Will she just stay in bed all day if not pushed to get up? Does she really need to get dressed for the day? Could meals be delivered to your room? Could you be expecting/hoping for too much from her at this point? Have you talked with her doctor about medication? This could help calm her down. I hope you can find a solution.

Is everyone met with the same resistance? Does she react to you in the same way? What does her day look like? Is she participating in other ways during the day? It takes time to get used to assistance. You may need to rethink the scheduled and expectations somewhat, but you may be able to come up with a schedule that works.

My DH takes lorazepam before his morning care and that works.
