I did not write this. Another woman wrote it on a dementia site elsewhere. She nailed.

Stages:

STAGE ONE: new diagnosis: “ I have to get everything right! I need to help him in all ways! I need to be on top of this! Line up drs appts. Read everything I can, buy notebooks to record each day etc etc

STAGE TWO: realization. No matter how “on” I am, he’s one step ahead. Every move I make, every breath I take he is watching me ( sorry Sting). He’s a toddler with a PhD. In control and I’m going to kill myself trying to be on top of this.

STAGE THREE: resignation. I cannot do this alone. I am slowly drowning here and he is not offering a hand. All those activity books? Games? Music? ( well he’s deaf that one was for me). Forget it.

Bandaid on an artery.

STAGE FOUR: F***K IT! I’m going to sit online venting in this group.

In the past 1 year my DW was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. In addition to the impact this disease had on her, she began suffering severe GI issues, to the point she had her gallbladder removed. Her gastro said it can take 6 months or more for the body to adjust, and at 80 she's probably looking at much longer. Some days I'm living through stages 1 through 4 all at the same time. Great post

This is so true! My DH is in the first stage, I try so hard to do something to help, to slow it, but no progress. I am seeing new issues come up… scary…. I wanted to control the outcome somehow by doing everything right… no way… I am watching it happen before my eyes… overwhelming, and this is just the beginning…. Then, of course I go back into denial…. Good grief!

We all do or have done the exact same things. There were times my husband seemed so normal that I didn’t think he actually had it. Now we are at the stage that I can’t deny it and take it day by day.
